This October, Tom Whittle from Teignmouth will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the fastest crossing of Iceland on foot for the charity CLIC Sargent.

CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading provider of support for young cancer patients under the age of 25, and their families.

When cancer strikes young lives CLIC Sargent helps families limit the damage cancer causes beyond their health. Cancer affects every part of life, for the young person and their families – relationships, confidence, money, school, and work. CLIC Sargent care teams will fight tirelessly to minimize the damage it causes.

Tom’s challenge has been agreed with Guinness World Records and he will aim to run a marathons and a half a day to complete his challenge.

Tom Whittle said: “Iceland is known to many as the land of fire and ice. The route will pass through snow, mountainous rock and volcanic ash. With notoriously stormy conditions and no guarantees of completion, I will aim to run over 700 kilometres in 12 days.”

The motivation for the run is fueled by Tom’s late nephew, Sonny.

Tom Continued saying: “Despite a constant smile, he spent half of his life receiving painful treatment for a rare form of cancer and passed away shortly after his first birthday. Unjustly, his whole life was taken from him and I feel owe it to him to make the most of mine.”

Every day, 11 children and young people in the UK hear the shocking news they have cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years.

CLIC Sargent Fundraising Engagement Manager for Devon and Cornwall, Jordan Anderton said: “CLIC Sargent is extremely grateful for Tom’s support. He is about to embark on an incredible challenge to help CLIC Sargent support more young people facing cancer. What is he doing extremely brave and selfless of him and on behalf of everyone at CLIC Sargent I would like to wish him the best of luck.”
