For those of you who know or have heard of Pip Bowhay from Kenton, you will be aware that she likes walking and she’s a passionate fund-raiser for local charities; she walked the 479 miles of the Santiago de Compostela back in 2015; shaved her hair off in 2016; has organised abseils down the church tower, frock swaps and compiled a cookbook – these activities together raising way over £10,000!

All this is pretty remarkable, but even more so when you hear that Pip lost half her sight as a result of a stroke in 2007 and her husband Richard passed away at the hospice in Exeter in 2011, when her two daughters were still in their early teens.

On 1st May, Pip begins walking from Dunnet Head (north of John O’Groats) to Land’s End via Holy Island, all in aid of Hospiscare in Exeter, who took such great care of Richard and the family through very difficult times; it’s a walk of nearly 1000 miles that will take her 3½ months. She’s aiming to stroll into Land’s End on her 63rd birthday on the 19th August!

Pip has set herself a preliminary target of £2,000, but she would dearly love to raise a whole lot more.  If you would like to read more about her fundraising effort for this great local charity or help with a donation or sponsorship, please visit Pip’s Plod pages at:

Pip put out a plea at the end of last year, through churches local to her route, asking for one night’s free accommodation wherever possible and has been fortunate in receiving many offers. In those areas where none were forthcoming Pip has checked into campsites or B&Bs at her own expense meaning that every penny donated will help Hospiscare in their amazing work.

Pip will be regularly updating her blog as she walks. This can be found at https://pips2018plodforhospiscare.wordpress.com/ - so do follow her and her adventures on this epic journey!
