Accrual Accounting: Why Your Business Might Need it More than You Think

For many business owners, especially those starting out, accounting is an afterthought. Revenue goes in, expenses go out, and the hope is that there’s something left at the end. But as companies grow, the need for accurate financial insight becomes not just helpful—it becomes essential. That’s where accrual accounting comes into play.

While cash-based accounting might work for freelancers or micro-businesses, accrual accounting offers a far more complete and forward-looking picture of your company’s financial health. In fact, many mid-sized and large enterprises are legally...

New Horizons

These days I am frequently speaking to clients that are new to this world. By ‘this world’ I mean ‘investing’, and by ‘new’ I may actually mean..... err..... ‘more mature’ (bear with me and let me give you an example).

Last week I met Mr Jackson (not his real name). Mr Jackson had recently retired and had ample income from his state and employers’ pensions to cover his expenses and enough to generate a regular surplus. In addition, by virtue of his lifestyle and a regular savings habit he had built up substantial amounts in cash deposit accounts. In terms of savings, he had never...

Not Enough Hours in the Day? Consider Virtual Support

With increasing demands on small to medium size businesses it is no surprise that many company directors and owners find themselves drowning in a sea of paperwork. Compared with large companies, small to medium size businesses usually have far fewer resources to help them with their day to day marketing and advertising needs whilst they comply with new demands on their time, for instance the recently introduced Real Time Information (RTI) introduced by HMRC. It is therefore no surprise that the shape of the workforce is changing dramatically with many companies wising up to the increasing...

Exeter businesses urged to maximise opportunities

Richard Palmer, Managing Director of business training enterprise Estadia is calling on Exeter businesses to maximise the opportunities delivered by the new national focus on the city.

Mr Palmer stated: “The news that IKEA is opening in Exeter is yet another indication of the growing status of the city as a viable location for business that will no doubt act as a further draw for other potential investors. Exeter has had an incredible year of prestigious national awards as well as celebrating the launch of retail giant John Lewis. But existing businesses must focus on preparation...

Last One Out Turn Off The Lights

The announcement recently that Santander are to reduce their in-branch advisers from 874 to 150 nationally follows the trend by the other banks including Lloyds TSB, HSBC, RBS and Barclays in eliminating or hugely reducing the number of advisers they have.

The exit is not only being seen amongst the big players as a number of building societies have also withdrawn from the market. In early 2011 Norwich & Peterborough Building Society sold their sales force to Aviva and ceased to give investment advice to their customers.

One would be forgiven for thinking that there is...
