Exeter Business Improvement District proposal launched

Over 50 business representatives were present at the launch of the Exeter BID proposal document which was revealed at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum on Monday (8 December).

Those attending the event learnt more about the BID and what will be included within the BID Business Plan which will go out to all voters in January 2015.

The business plan identified three main priorities: marketing and events, welcome and safe as well as looking after businesses.

Young people in Exeter are being given the chance to apply for Wolseley UK’s customer service apprenticeship scheme via a vacancy at its Plumb Center branch on Sowton Industrial Estate in Exeter.

Wolseley UK provides construction products and materials through a nationwide branch network, including Plumb and Parts Center, Pipe Center, Climate Center, Drain Center and William Wilson. The company employs 6,000 people, has a network of 919 branches and boasts a commercial fleet of more than 800 vehicles, making it one of the biggest in the UK.

Stagecoach Group is one of the top 20 most admired businesses in the UK, according to an authoritative annual survey of corporate reputation.

The transport group, which operates bus and rail services in the UK and North America, was rated 20th out of nearly 240 businesses across 24 sectors in the Britain’s Most Admired Companies (BMAC) 2014 Awards.

Stagecoach was ranked above well-known businesses including Marks and Spencer, Alliance Boots, BT Group, Coca-Cola Enterprises, and Rolls-Royce.

SW residents have trust in local businesses

People in the South West have a dramatically higher level of trust in businesses in their area than they do in UK business as a whole.

The CBI’s Great Business Debate (its campaign to increase public trust in business) is today (Monday) publishing a YouGov survey of over four thousand people, including 350 in the South West. The South West private sector economy registered a pick-up in growth in November from October’s recent low, according to PMI survey data.

The rates of expansion in total activity and new business both accelerated for the first time since June, but remained weaker than the respective UK averages. Eighteen-year-old entrepreneur, Hannah White, has opened her first beauty salon based on Marsh Barton Trading Estate in Exeter.

Hannah, who grew up in Alphington and attended local schools Bowhill Primary School and St James High School, trained as a beautician at Exeter College and went on to work at several Exeter based salons before making the brave decision to follow her dreams and go it alone.
