Rank Tracker Review: Keyword Search, SERP Checking and Rank Tracking, All in One

What makes an outstanding SEO campaign? Whatever answer you give, you will most likely  agree that fruitful SEO requires effective keyword analysis and research. The latter, in turn, is impossible without the use of top-notch SEO software and keyword finder tools. In this review, we will get you introduced to one such tool, namely, Rank Tracker, which is one of the four original instruments comprising SEO PowerSuite.

To prepare for this review, we’ve thoroughly tested every rank tracking feature this software has to offer and are now ready to give an honest account of everything we’ve found out. So without further ado, here’s our Rank Tracker overview.

What Is Rank Tracker?

Before we get down to a detailed discussion of each Rank Tracker feature, let us say a few words about what this software actually is. In short, it is one of the several parts of a larger SEO PowerSuite bundle. Besides Rank Tracker, the suite likewise comprises the following three software components:

  • Website Auditor: On-page auditing, website analysis, and all sorts of reporting tools for SEO agencies;
  • SEO SpyGlass: Backlink finding software empowered by an immense database with trillions of backlinks in it;
  • LinkAssistant: Exclusive software that daily crawls billions of pages and helps SEO professionals to pinpoint opportunities for link building.

The Rank Tracker tool, as the name implies, is software designed to solve a broad spectrum of SEO tasks, from keyword analysis to SERP checking. The tool is available in three editions — free, pro, and enterprise — and we will review each of them in detail in the pricing section. As this review will further show, even the basic edition allows access to a huge range of rank-tracking tasks, which makes it a perfect fit for SEO professionals.

Review Summary: Major Pros and Cons

For those readers who don’t have time or desire to read a lengthy software review with detailed descriptions of each Rank Tracker feature, we have prepared a summary of our findings. Check on the table below to find out if this is the right software to meet your SEO needs.

  • Synchronization with Google Analytics;
  • Extended reporting options make the software super useful for SEO agencies.
  • With so many options and features available, the software might appear cumbersome to those new to SEO;
  • Needs download, installation, and more than that, you must see to it, it gets all the necessary updates on time;
  • To get the most of it, you will have to run proxies along with the tool because it must do large-scale web crawling.

A Full Review of Rank Tracker Features

Now, it is high time to take a closer look at each Rank Tracker feature. As you will see below, the tool is a real all-in-one SEO solution that covers any need at any level.

Keyword targeting

So, the first thing that struck us as we were preparing this review is that Rank Tracker is super advanced when it comes to monitoring keyword position. Thus, you can set it up to track positioning globally or in local search engines, on desktop and mobile devices, on a daily or monthly basis. And you get all of this with the free edition, which is one of the most stunning things because we would initially think that the free plan offers some basic coverage only.

On the whole, the software gets you covered with three large areas when it comes to keyword targeting. These are ranking summary, tracking as such, and a keyword map. A nice feature that might be of great use to large-scale SEO campaigns is that the tool can be set up to run certain ranking tasks on a specific date or to send you alerts if it notices important changes in your project. It can likewise compare your performance against your competitors and track your ranking progress  for a certain period.

Keyword research

Our strong belief is that good tracking software must be able to assist you with keyword research, too. That is, it must help to find keywords (including those used by competitors) that you do not rank for as well as offer tools for simple and effective keyword planning. Rank Tracker does exactly that. Here is a full list of tasks that it gets completed for you in keyword research:

  • Making a list of keywords for which your domain is already ranking in Google (region-specific targeting available here);
  • Identifying competitors’ keywords for which your domain doesn’t rank yet (you can compare yourself against up to 5 competitors per project in the professional edition);
  • Finding organic keywords with the help of Google Search Console and Google Analytics;
  • Getting new keyword ideas from Google Ads keyword Planner, Yandex Wordstat, or other keyword suggestion instruments;
  • Getting new keyword ideas from popular search engines (e.g., Google, Bing, Amazon, YouTube, etc.);
  • Advanced search suggestions, including related questions suggestions;
  • TF-IDF explorer which allows finding the competitors’ most frequently used KWs;
  • KW ideas generated by mixing words, phrases, and misspelled words;
  • KW Sandbox where all new keywords are saved, from where you can analyze your keywords, group and regroup them, track selected positions, update your lists, etc.

As you can see, the keyword research resource is impressive. What we particularly liked when preparing this review is that the software allows you to fully customize the research to your needs. That is, apart from choosing the search engines and type of the device, you can likewise choose to check organic listings alone or with enriched results (images, ads, news, etc.), scan the top 10, 20, 50, and even 100 and whether you will be researching for the domain alone or with subdomains, or, maybe, for the exact URL.

SERP analysis

 As we are writing this review, we can safely recommend using Rank Tracker not only as a keyword finder but as a SERP checker. With this functionality, the software gives you all the data necessary to pinpoint opportunities to rank for keywords  of your competitors as well as obtain advanced insights into their SEO strategies.

Now, what exactly does the tool’s SERP analysis encompass? To perform it, you select the search engine and enter your target keyword. For this combination, the tool provides you with the following output: keyword difficulty, the number of searches, expected visits, estimated PPC, competition, ranking by page strength, and all SERP average metrics (Page InLink Rank, Domain InLink Rank, etc.). The Google SERP table (or any other search engine selected) covers the same metrics for each competitor. On the whole, our experience suggests that Rank Tracker is the most advanced SERP checker we’ve been testing so far.

Competitor research

Competition research module  is as extensive as keyword research and SERP checker instruments but, contrary to them, it is surprisingly uncomplicated in use. Let us briefly review how it works:

  • Domain competitors: Type in the target URL, select domain/prefix/exact URL/domain and subdomains, and the software provides you with full details on an unlimited number of competitors covering such metrics as unique KWs, intersecting KWs, organic traffic, etc.
  • Topic competitors: Type in the topics of interest, adjust the settings (search engine, desktop/mobile, top 10/20/50/100, domain/prefix/exact URL/domain and subdomains), and Rank Tracker gets you covered with a whole deal of data. Namely, for each competitor, you get the information about organic traffic, Page InLink Rank, Domain InLink Rank, sites linking to a page, and more.
  • Top pages: Our top favored feature is the ranking by web pages, it allows getting insights into the number of pages your domain is ranking in Google, organic traffic and its value, the total number of keywords within the top 100 results as well as the top keyword and its traffic for every page.

All in all, if you want to perform competition research with Rank Tracker, you will be pleased by how simple it actually is. But if you want to check competitors’ ranking keywords, most likely, you will want to use the paid-for edition because the free version will only get you covered on a limited number of competitors per project (e.g., 2 competitors for competitor ranking checks).

Domain strength

What we find to be the best about researching domain strength characteristics with Rank Tracker is that this can be turned into an ongoing and undisrupted process. You can, thus, set up the software to update the information for the project domain, schedule rank tracking tasks and alerts, and review the competitors’ performance in a special graph. Now, what type of information does the domain strength research provide? Well, here are the five core areas:

  • Domain InLink Rank;
  • Key domain info (IP, country, age);
  • Indexing in search engines;
  • Backlinks (linking domains, IPs, C-Blocks);
  • Social media popularity.

Reports

If you are an individual user, you might be well satisfied with the Rank Tracker features described above. SEO professionals, meanwhile, need more reporting instruments that would enable them to update their clients on the outcomes of their performance.

We know from our own experience that many rank tracking tools turn out to be unfit for SEO agencies because they do not provide automated solutions for customized reporting. Rank Tracker is just flawless in this regard for it has the whole collection of customizable report templates. Below we review some useful types of reports you can get with this software.

All things considered, where does Rank Tracker stand as opposed to other market players? Here are four core aspects in which the software stays ahead of its competitors as follows from our review:

  • Price: Rank Tracker is simply cheaper than any other tool you find in the market, not to mention that a large portion of its features is available for free.
  • Scope: The software is 100% the most advanced tool in terms of the number of options and features that it has to offer. We’ve been able to see it ourselves when working on this review and we find proof of it in user comments.
  • No limits: The tool must be downloaded, installed, and updated but, in return, you get truly unlimited research possibilities: unlimited websites, unlimited keywords, and hundreds of search engines.
  • Reporting: Reporting is of top importance to SEO professionals, and Rank Tracker exceeds all expectations in this regard with its customizable report templates for any occasion.

Final Thoughts

The key takeaway from this review is that Rank Tracker is, perhaps, the most profound tracking tool available in the market today. The software is, in fact, so advanced that it might appear to be a gift for SEO pros and a challenge for someone less savvy in working with rank trackers. After using it for a while, we can say that the first impression is misleading and the tool is far more user-friendly than it seems to be at first sight. Given that its free edition has a huge range of helpful features to offer, we can safely recommend this software to individual users and SEO agencies alike.
