Exeter University Student named as Institute of Directors' Student of the Year

Selin Yigitbasi has been tipped as a name to watch after being named Student of the Year in the Institute of Directors 2013 Directors Awards.

The award recognises promising students who have demonstrated qualities that can lead them to becoming the directors of the future.

Selin, aged 21, studied BA Business and Management at the University of Exeter, with proficiency in French.  Since 2011, she has undertaken a variety of internships in companies such as Coca-Cola Company, Tuborg Brewing and Malting Ltd, Brand Finance, and blur Group. She also worked as a freelance designer for Ozpack, a popular book strap and handbag brand, and her designs are now sold in her home country of Turkey.

In her final year of University, she helped launch the ‘IoD Exeter’ student committee, a steering group designed to enhance the student membership experience.  Within the last year, Selin also proposed a new dairy product to a company in Turkey, and worked in collaboration with the team to launch it to Turkish market. She wrote her final year dissertation on her experiences in doing so.  She is now undertaking a short course in graphic design at University of the Arts in London.

The award was open to all IoD student members across the United Kingdom, and students were judged on a range of attributes including commercial awareness, leadership, communication and ambition.  The final six were selected after a rigorous application process and assessment day at the IoD.

Said Selin “I am very honoured to be the winner of this award, and to represent the name of the Institute with me throughout my career. I will capitalise on this achievement by using the award as a commendation to support the rest of my current and future achievements, and to attest to my personal integrity and character.”

IoD South West chairman Richard Ayre said: “This is an outstanding achievement by Selin who has demonstrated real entrepreneurial flair combined with a solid business sense. I am sure she will go far in whichever business field she chooses to pursue.”

The IoD Director of the Year Awards seek to highlight outstanding business people across the UK.  Regional winners all go forward to the national finals.
