AN AWARD-WINNING ice-cream company has revealed this month (December 2022) how it worked with a fellow Devon-based business to create carbon balanced packaging sleeves for its range.

Granny Gothards joined forces with Newton Abbot-based Newton Print to develop the packaging for its pots of luxury ice-cream going on sale in Waitrose.

Amanda Stansfield, Managing Director and Owner at Granny Gothards, said: “We have been producing our range of ice-cream for more than 10 years and were approached in 2021 to trial our products in 60 different Waitrose stores.

“We all buy products with our eyes and we knew packaging was extremely important, so approached Newton Print to help us come up with something fabulous, and they didn’t disappoint.

“It was great fun being able to visit the design department and look at all the different colours. We really can’t fault the team at Newton Print as they offered such a professional and responsive service - Simon even travelled to us to personally deliver sleeves when we needed them in a hurry, and they were busy!

“We also thought it was important to work with a fellow Devon-based business, as people are always interested in where the product they’re consuming comes from. With our marketing campaigns, customers can find out where the milk or the eggs used to make the ice-cream come from and now, we can tell them that the packaging also comes from a producer based only a few miles from us; it really is a match made in Devon!”

Granny Gothards was established in 2006 on Gothards Farm in Somerset. It has gone from making six different flavours of ice-cream to creating 195 and having them used by top chefs and in high-end restaurants all over the world.

Now based in Devon, it still makes every single batch of its ice-cream by hand.

Simon Besley, Sales and Marketing Director at Newton Print, which specialises in assisting food and drink producers to bring their products to market on time, said: “It was great to work with Amanda and the team. We helped them to match colours to their previous sleeve packaging and made some suggestions to improve the appearance too.

“The finished sleeves look amazing with vibrant Pantone colours and spot UV varnish. We’ve also been able to carbon balance the sleeves through our World Land Trust scheme, meaning that they are produced with a clear conscience.
