Exeter's men and women are being urged to step forward in the fight against cancer by volunteering at Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life Pretty Muddy.

Organisers are recruiting now for Race for Life’s volunteer army – the squad of dedicated supporters who help make the event an outstanding success for everyone who takes part.

As the countdown starts to the event at Westpoint Exeter on July 23, people from all walks of life are being encouraged to sign up as volunteers at www.raceforlife.org, or by contacting event manager Ruth Chamings at ruth.chamings@cancer.org.uk.

There’s a wide variety of fun and inspiring roles on offer.

While at Race for Life Pretty Muddy – the 5k obstacle course – volunteers will also play a crucial role encouraging and supporting women of all ages as they tackle the scramble nets and inflatable hurdles, clamber up the sky-scrapper climbing frame and triumphantly glide down the giant inflatable slide into a mud bath.

There’s also the opportunity to be a ‘Mud Mixer’ on the day, helping to get the consistency just right for participants to crawl, wade and splash about in.

Ruth Chamings, Race for Life event manager for Exeter, said: “Race for Life is women-only for participants but we really want men to seize the chance to get involved by volunteering. Helping at Race for Life is fun, challenging, inspiring and rewarding.  Our volunteers will gain practical experience and, by lending a helping hand, they will have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping to beat cancer sooner.

“Everyone is welcome.  Volunteers don’t need to know anyone who is taking part in Exeter Race for Life. By simply joining the volunteer squad they will be doing their bit.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco for the past 15 years, is an inspiring women-only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Marathon events which raises millions of pounds every year to help fund life-saving research to help beat 200 different types of cancer.
Ruth added: “Our volunteers have a great time working with other members of the community to create a hugely successful fundraising event, enabling thousands of women and their supporters to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK’s pioneering work.
“Without the dedication of local men and women, who volunteer their time and energy, our events simply wouldn’t be possible.”
Cancer Research UK staff will brief, guide and support volunteers. Everyone who signs up to help at the event will receive a special t-shirt to wear on the day.
