Travel warning as snow continues

Police are continuing to advise drivers in Devon and Cornwall to only travel if absolutely necessary due to snow and icy conditions.

A Met Office Amber Warning remains in place with freezing conditions and further snowfall expected in the region into Monday (19 March).

Police have been working with partner agencies all weekend to keep people safe and main routes open.

Areas of Devon and Cornwall have seen significant snowfall causing challenging conditions and some disruption on the road network, with a number of collisions and abandoned vehicles causing further problems.

A large number of drivers are currently stuck on the A30 at Sourton Cross/Whiddon Down [7pm] due to earlier collisions and the weather. Police are asking those motorists to move their vehicles to the side of the road to enable police and gritters to get through to assist.

The multi-agency operation to keep roads as clear as possible via gritting and ploughing continues.

Temperatures will remain low on Monday and driving conditions remain treacherous in places due to ice and snow.

Police are urging drivers to heed the weather warnings and the advice not to travel this evening or Monday morning unless absolutely necessary.

If you do need to drive please ensure you plan ahead, take extra care and allow more time for your journey.

A police spokesman said: “We are concerned about rush hour traffic tomorrow and would advise the public to drive to the conditions of the road, slow down, keep your distance, and keep an eye on weather reports before you set off.

“If you have to travel, carry additional warm clothing/footwear, food, drink, a charged mobile phone, and ensure your vehicle has a full tank of fuel.”
