Teignbridge District Council’s parking team will be on hand next week, Monday 16 to Friday 20 July, encouraging motorists to go cashless as a convenient way to pay for car parking.

Motorists can visit Teignbridge-owned car parks and will have the opportunity to speak with Teignbridge’s parking team who will help explain the process of cashless payments along with the many benefits of choosing this quick and easy payment method.

Advice and help will be available to people not familiar with these payments and the parking team will be around to answer any questions between 10am to 2pm at:

Monday 16 July - The Point, Teignmouth
Tuesday 17 July - Barton Hill, Dawlish
Wednesday 18 July - Halcyon Road, Newton Abbot
Thursday 19 July - The Ness, Shaldon
Friday 20 July – Seaward car park, Dawlish Warren

In November 2016 Teignbridge invested nearly £250,000 to upgrade and convert all the district’s parking machines to enable payment by card and phone. This also covered the introduction of the 12-sided one pound coins introduced last year.

Customers can now use a range of payments in Teignbridge-owned car parks. The use of cashless payments, especially contactless ones, are quick and easy with no charge to use your card and no minimum payment required. There is the additional option to pay with your smart phone using Apple Pay or Android Pay. People can also choose to pay using the RingGo mobile App or payment service. All Teignbridge-owned car parks still accept cash as payment.

This is the second year Teignbridge’s parking team have been involved in a car parking promotion, following a similar successful initiative last year which saw the team visit town centre car parks. The approach for offering hands on advice to motorists paying cashless supports figures over the past few years which shows there has seen a significant increase in the number of card payments made in Teignbridge-owned car parks, rising from 3% in 2015/16 (£110,179) to 7% in 2016/17 (£253,029) and 20% in 2017/18 (£705,538).

Teignbridge is always looking at ways to modernise its service and part of the council’s ten year strategy recognises the importance of being customer focused and welcoming innovation.

Tony Watson, Teignbridge District Council’s Interim Head of Commercial Services, said:

“We live in a digital age where technology plays such an essential part of our everyday life. By enabling and encouraging people to choose cashless payments it is quicker and more convenient for them and it also helps the council to make the best use of public money and council resources.

“If you’ve never used cashless payments before or have any questions about trying it then our friendly team are here to help and guide you through the simple process.”

All Teignbridge-owned car parks accept card payments, with the exception of Widecombe-in-the-Moor and Moretonhampstead. The payment machines at the barrier operated car parks at Cricketfield Road, Newfoundland Way and the Multi Storey car parks in Newton Abbot accept card payment but are not yet enabled to take contactless, Apple Pay or Android Pay.
