A severe weather warning has been issued for Devon by the Met Office.

Strong winds are expected to affect the region on Sunday morning with gusts of 45-55mph quite widely inland, locally 60mph, particularly on exposed coastlines and hills.

The winds will be accompanied by a band of rain, which may be heavy and persistent at times.

Driving conditions could be tricky, with the potential for a combination of strong winds and spray on roads. There could be some minor travel disruption.

Chief forecaster at the Exeter-based agency said: “An area of low pressure is expected to deepen in the South West ppproaches overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning, bringing strengthening south to southeasterly winds along with a band of persistent, and at times heavy rainfall.

“There is currently good confidence in the overall timing and location of the strengthening winds, but less certainty surrounding the location of the heaviest rainfall. Additionally, the strong winds coincide with high spring tides which will lead to some large waves and spray affecting coastal areas exposed to the south.”

The five day forecast for Devon is as follows:

Today:
A drier and brighter day for many today, with sunny spells and the odd shower developing through the day. Turning cloudy from the west, with a band of showery rain arriving into western parts by the later afternoon. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:
Showery rain across all parts at first, clearing to the east overnight to leave clearer spells and occasional showers, heavy and wintry at times, in western counties by dawn. Minimum temperature 3 °C.

Saturday:
A mixture of sunshine and showers for most tomorrow, these turning heavy in places and wintry over higher ground. Feeling chilly too, with light winds across the region. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:
A frosty start on Sunday, with rain and strengthening winds arriving from the southwest during the day. Rain slowly moving north-eastwards through Monday, and showers possible on Tuesday.
