Overnight closures will be needed at Junction 30 of the M5 next week in order to safely complete surfacing at Sandygate roundabout.

Devon County Council has been carrying out extensive work at the roundabout over the past couple of weeks.

From Monday (4 December) until Friday 8 December, the motorway junction will need to be closed for a further five nights, rather than overnight lane closures as originally planned. This is primarily to create a safer work environment due to the high volumes of HGVs having to be escorted through the site. This has the additional benefits of allowing surfacing, signing and the installation of new road markings to be carried out more efficiently.

During the daytime, the junction and roundabouts will be open, but from 8pm to 5am there will be no access for any vehicles on or off the M5 at Junction 30. However, motorway access will be maintained at Junction 29.

The smaller roundabout at the motorway services will remain open with lane closures in place, allowing access from Sidmouth Road into Sowton Industrial Estate.

Signed diversions will be in place for all lighter vehicles such as cars and vans, but as they will not all be suitable for HGVs, HGVs travelling from Sidmouth Road, Exeter, to East Devon, or vice versa, will be escorted through the closed junction.

HGV drivers will be stopped at the edge of the site and may have to wait for around 20-30 minutes until being permitted to travel through safely.

During the week commencing Monday 11 December, the junction will be open as normal during the daytime with overnight lane closures as required.

The scheme is being funded using National Productivity Investment Funding, and work is being carried out by contractor Tarmac.

During the overnight closures the diversions will be:
