Emergency crews have spent a fourth day trying to extinguish the devastating blaze that tore through the Royal Clarence Hotel on Exeter's Cathedral Green.

Firefighters are still on the scene tackling hotspots in the historic building.

The police cordon around the Cathedral Green site was relaxed earlier today (MONDAY), allowing more businesses to open.

Pedestrians can now access the whole of Gandy Street and a new section of the lower end of the High Street.

North Street and South Street have reopened, but all other cordons remain in place.

St Petrocks Centre for homeless or vulnerably housed people will reopen at 8am tomorrow (Tuesday 1 November).

There is no pedestrian access to Cathedral Green. Vehicle access from South Street is also suspended and as a result there is no parking available in or around the Cathedral or Bishop's Palace and no parking at the Cathedral. Also, due to the limited capacity of the Chapter House it will not be possible to welcome all who wish to pray.

A statement from the Cathedral read: "Access to Cathedral Green has been severely restricted since a fire broke out in one of the historic buildings in Cathedral Yard early on Friday morning. Dean Jonathan, members of the Chapter and everyone at Exeter Cathedral continue to hold all those affected in our thoughts and prayers.

"Up until now we have always hoped that we would be able to make the Cathedral available for the people of Exeter to enter for quiet prayer and reflection.

"As the incident has continued to develop, and following conversations with the emergency services on the ground, it has become clear that, for the time being at least, this will no longer be possible."

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service have sent out a special 'thank you' to Exeter residents and business owners for their support during the Royal Clarence fire. Read more here
