Overnight closures will be needed at the Exeter Road/Turks Head Junction in Honiton this week as the improvement scheme nears completion.

The junction, which connects the western end of Honiton to the A30 dual carriageway, is being converted to a mini roundabout from the existing “give way” arrangement.

The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of this month and the final stage of the scheme, which involves resurfacing the road, will be carried out during overnight road closures on the evenings of Wednesday (16 March), Thursday (17 March) and Friday (18 March). The closures will be between 7pm and 5am the following morning.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “No doubt everyone will welcome this upgrade once it has been completed. Laying the new road surface is the final element of this vital scheme and we need to close the road overnight to carry this out. As a courtesy to neighbours, the noisiest work will be undertaken before 9pm. Every effort is being made to minimise disruption, and diversion signs will be in place, but please allow extra time for your journey during this work.”

Councillor Sara Randall Johnson, Devon County Councillor for Honiton St Michael’s, said: “Like me, I’m sure everyone is delighted this project is coming to a conclusion. This is the final phase of the scheme that will impact on road users and I thank everyone for their patience and understanding during these improvement works. Honiton’s a thriving place and attracts a lot of people and this new layout will help the town to continue to prosper.”

The work will be split into two phases, requiring different road closures and diversions.

The phase one closure, on the nights of Wednesday (16 March) and Thursday (17 March), will be in place from 7pm to 5am.

•    Turks Head Lane will be closed to traffic in both directions on the short section between the Premier Inn vehicle entrance and Exeter Road;

•    Exeter Road will be one way, westbound only, meaning traffic can only travel towards Exeter on this stretch of road.

Access will be maintained to Honiton Garage, Aldi and the Premier Inn, and diversions will be signed via the town’s eastern (A35) junction with the A30 and a loop via Fenny Bridges junction on the A30 to the west of the town.

During phase two, on the night of Friday (18 March) between 7pm and 5am the following morning:

•    Exeter Road will be closed in both directions at the junction site;

•    Turks Head Lane will be one way from the Premier Inn entrance, so it will only be possible for traffic exiting the A30 using Turks Head Lane to make a right turn (towards Heathpark Industrial Estate).

Again, access will be maintained to Honiton Garage, Aldi and the Premier Inn, and diversions will be signed via the town’s eastern (A35) junction with the A30 and a loop via Fenny Bridges junction on the A30 to the west of the town.

Access to individual properties and all parts of the town will be maintained throughout.
