Want to know more about East Devon’s new recycling and waste service changes next year? Go along to one of the information events taking place.

Service changes in Exmouth from February 2017 and will be rolled out district-wide from June 2017

The first of seven information events to help residents with a new improved recycling collection service which is being introduced in Exmouth from February next year is being held in the town on Thursday. (Thursday Nov 10)

At each event, recycling officers from East Devon District Council, will be on hand to explain the new service and help householders with their questions. The new service means that, for the first time, residents will be able to recycle cardboard, mixed plastics and cartons/Tetra Paks alongside the extensive number of other items they can already recycle.

Each household in Exmouth will receive an additional 75 litre reusable sack for their extra recycling which they can use alongside their green recycling box and blue food caddy. These containers will be collected from the kerbside every week, and with more recycling and less bulky waste being thrown away, residents’ grey wheeled waste bins, will be collected every three weeks.

Early in the New Year, all households in the Exmouth area will receive, through the post, vital information about the new service including the start date, a recycling and waste collection calendar, a list of the items they can recycle and tops tips on how they can recycle more.

The first information event is being held on Thursday (Thurs Nov 10) at Exmouth Library from 10am to 5pm.

Further events are being held on:

  • Wednesday November 16 at Exmouth Tesco store from 10am to 5pm
  • Saturday December 10 at Exmouth Market in The Strand from 9am to 4:30pm
  • Monday December 12 at Exmouth Town Hall from 10am to 4pm
  • Wednesday January 4 at Imperial Wreck Christmas tree shredding event from 8.30 am to 2pm
  • Saturday January 14 at Magnolia Walk Shopping Centre from 10am to 5pm
  • Monday January 30 at Brixington Parade 10 till 5.30pm (TBC)

The new service is being introduced in two separate phases across East Devon  next year – firstly in the Exmouth area in February and then to the rest of the district from June.

Examples of new items that residents will be able to recycle as part of the new service include yoghurt pots, plastic meat and vegetable trays, margarine and ice cream tubs, small electrical items such as irons, printed card, egg boxes, tubes from toilet and kitchen rolls, brown cardboard boxes, card from packaging such as toys, clean cardboard food packaging (cereal packets, cardboard sleeves) and much, much more.

Cllr Iain Chubb, the council’s portfolio holder for the Environment, said that the information events were an ideal opportunity for residents to talk to officers about the new service.

“Our officers have a great deal of experience in how we can all improve our recycling and minimise the waste we throw away. Talking to our team will really help householders prepare for when the new service starts in Exmouth in February.

“We are here to help our residents through these changes and we will have a dedicated team of officers who will be out on the streets of our district giving advice and assisting wherever they can when the service begins.

“Residents have been asking the council, through surveys, to help them recycle more and waste less for some time now and last year more than 1300 households in Exmouth (The Colony) and new Feniton trialed the new service. The trials proved so successful, that residents asked for the service to continue.”
