Drainage improvements on A373 due to be completed this month

Work is underway on drainage improvements on the A373 between Honiton and Cullompton.

The scheme will address standing water issues at three locations along the road, with work at all three sites expected to be completed by the end of July.

Work has started at Came Cross/Crammer Barton to install a new drainage system which will reduce surface water run-off in this area. Access is available from the Cullompton end of the A373 as far as Crammer Barton and from the Honiton end as far as Colliton.

From Monday (17 July) work will also start on replacing a damaged culvert and kerbs at Post Cross, across the junction of the road to Kentisbeare. Improvements will also be made to existing ditches. This will be carried out while work continues at Came Cross.

The road will be closed around the area of each of these sites with local diversions in place, although HGVs and buses will not be able to use the entire A373. Signs will be erected at each end of the closure stating ‘Businesses open as usual’ and with as much information as possible about the location of the closure.

Existing gullies will be replaced at Hembury Fort with temporary traffic lights in use.

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “Standing water has been a long term problem at each of these three sites on the A373 and it can potentially lead to icy conditions in winter. Every effort is being made to minimise disruption, with the contractor working 11 hour days and also on Saturdays. It is hoped the work can be completed in order to re-open the route by the end of July.”
