The award-winning Thurlestone Hotel in South Devon has announced the opening of its new restaurant ‘The Trevilder’, following a million pound refurbishment.

The development has seen the existing restaurant undergo a complete transformation with a new identity and new menus ready for the summer season, featuring produce sourced almost exclusively from within the county.

Set across two levels and with floor-to-ceiling windows that make the most of the dreamy coastal views, the restaurant has been completely redesigned by London-based Fabled Studio, whose work can be seen in many of the capital’s best dining rooms including Dinner by Heston Blumenthal and Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. An elegant, art deco style runs throughout The Trevilder, with marble flooring, mirrors and lighting echoing the 1920s and 30s, alongside discreet naval detailing that gives a nod to the region’s maritime history.

Guests dining in the lower section of the restaurant (above right) will have the best of the views, with uninterrupted vistas across to the Thurlestone Rock Arch and coastline beyond.

The division of the space into distinct areas means there is greater flexibility for large parties, with a semi-private dining room that can seat up to 36. For a really special occasion, there’s also a marble-topped chef’s table that offers a secluded space for up to 16 to dine on champagne and oysters, or lavish seafood platters.

The restaurant, which scooped two AA rosettes last winter, will continue to focus on classic British cooking using the best local ingredients and as far as possible all the meat, fish, dairy, fruit and veg, and even speciality breads are sourced from within Devon.

The new menu at The Trevilder will offer a much wider variety, with diners able to choose from a daily-changing ‘market’ menu, featuring a small selection of dishes prepared using seasonal produce; an extensive à la carte menu, showcasing the best quality produce including home smoked salmon, River Yealm oysters, hand dived Start Bay scallops and Aune Valley Beef; and a mouth-watering eight course taster menu.

There is also a grill and, for an extra special occasion, an enormous seafood sharing platter that includes a whole native lobster and Salcombe crab.

The menu is accompanied by a revamped wine list, prepared in conjunction with renowned West Country wine merchants Christopher Piper Wines of Ottery St Mary.

Owned and run by the Grose family for over 120 years, the Thurlestone Hotel knows a thing or two about family dining and celebrations.

To this end, although only open for dining in the evenings, the restaurant will continue to offer Sunday lunch and early dinner sittings for residents with children during the school holidays.

The hotel also offers more informal dining at The Village Inn (which itself was refurbished extensively in 2016, when it also received one AA rosette) and the seasonal Rock Pool bistro.
