It was the conflict of a generation and one that many will never forget. On 2nd April 1982, Argentina invaded the Falklands Islands with the aim of recapturing them from Spain. Join us for An Evening with Simon Weston to hear about how the Falklands War changed his life forever, along with the lives of many of his comrades.

The Islands, which had been controlled by Great Britain for nearly 150 years, became a battle ground and the UK government were quick to defend both the Islands and its inhabitants.

What was to follow saw the deaths of 655 Argentinian Soldiers and 255 British Serviceman. Amongst those who were sent to the conflict was Simon Weston CBE.

In one of the most horrific moments of the conflict the RFA Sir Galahad was bombed by two Argentinian planes, Simon was on board at the time.

This was an event which would change his life forever.

Hosted by one of his closest friends, David Fitzgerald, the show provides a unique insight into the highs and lows Simon has faced before and after that moment in 1982.

Soldier, father, grandfather, Simon tells his story with humour and insight.

In his first appearance of this kind in Exeter, Simon will take to the stage with David, who is himself a charismatic speaker and mid morning presenter on BBC Radio Devon.

On his website, Simon says, “In 1982 I was aboard the Sir Galahad when it was destroyed at Bluff Cove in the Falklands Islands. I suffered 46% burns to my body and went on to have numerous operations. However, I was one of the lucky ones. I survived. Since then it has been my privilege to have been invited to speak at events across the UK and abroad. I have met some wonderful people and had the opportunity to have been involved in many worthwhile charities. ”

Simon is described as an inspiring and moving speaker who is humorous and engaging. His enthusiasm is infectious and he is a master in topics such as:

Overcoming adversity
Accepting change
Dealing with challenges
Liking the person you are
Diversity
Bravery
Dignity
Inspiring others

Simon is a highly sought after speaker and spaces are limited at the event.
