Why am I a magnet for unusual people when I travel?

In the last few months I’ve used public transport more and more, not least to get to London in my search for a new job. For all my moans about the cost, delays and overcrowding, public transport is relatively cheap and convenient given petrol, parking and accommodation costs. However that convenience is mitigated by the experience. Or it has been for me.

I appear to have become a bit of a magnet for “unusual” people. There have been the oddly sinister incidents. I realise people fall asleep on trains and I’ve been subjected to the head falling on my shoulder etc. However, on one...

I'm single and happy (apart from 2 for 1 meal offers)!

I am a single woman.

Turns out this makes me a lesser being. Someone who deserves your pity or, worse, guidance on how this disastrous state of affairs can be resolved.

I accept that sounds a little extreme. And I’m not trying to rail against the world in a bitter, victim type rant (I thought I’d leave that for a later blog...) but since becoming single I have noticed a difference in the way I am viewed.

‘Evidence, please’ I hear you demand. (Look, I live alone, hearing voices is normal, OK?). Well first, let’s look at food. No, I’m not going to say how awful it is...

“Cheaper than therapy and more fun” - Forever Young

People don’t often talk about the downside of singing. A few years ago Chris Rowbury wrote something about it in his blog - http://blog.chrisrowbury.com/2011/04/why-singing-is-bad-for-you-and-7.html We know about the health and social benefits but, apart from Chris, few mention the problems.

Singing can become addictive — once you start it’s very hard to stop. It’s such an enjoyable activity that you will start noticing it everywhere and begin to take every opportunity you can to sing and even whistle (space limitations prevent a detailed description of the negative aspects of...

Whitehead's World: Smells like team spirit...

The latest instalment of Chris Whitehead's blog sees the Exeter Chiefs man bracing himself for a huge game again Leinster in the Heineken Cup...

On arrival at Sandy Park before venturing into what stands to be our biggest rugby test so far, there was a very different pre-match atmosphere than usual amongst the players.

Despite many attempts to play down the importance of this game within the squad to the media, for me there was no hiding from the fact that this game will be the biggest not only of this season but potentially of our careers.

To play in the...

Delightful Deborah does John Lewis opening...

After much excitement watching what was the old Debenhams building transform into the spectacular JL store, I was always going to be waiting at the front of the queue to experience the opening of Exeter's new fantastic addition. Just about everyone I know was informed that this was my intention, friends at work, on face book and at the gym (missing my usual body pump class, which I never miss!) As my dad waited in the queue at around 8.25am and 40 or so people in front of him, I dashed to Starbucks to fuel us with caffeine for the shopping extravaganza ahead. Only a few drops of rain...

Why can't we have it all?

I read another depressing article in the Daily Mail Online about how women ‘can’t have it all’ when it comes to career and motherhood. I find this kind of article the worst, probably worse than seeing the streams of airbrushed models strewn across the pages of glossy magazines, beacaue I know that is unrealistic…I am old enough and wise enough to know what ‘real’ women’s bodies look like, but there is nothing more crushing, or more negative to portray, than telling women they simply can’t ‘have it all’.

Firstly, what is ‘having it all’?? This itself is confusing, because one of the...

#FreeTheTopsham1 – Why you need a social media policy

A recent Twitter campaign, #FreeTheTopsham1, started by an Exeter councillor highlights the need for all businesses to have a social media policy in place for employees.

#FreeTheTopsham1 – The Story

A Topsham based PCSO, tweeting as @TopshamPolice, was recently asked by her employer, Devon & Cornwall Police, to stop tweeting and undertake some training following complaints by the University of Exeter Students’ Guild about some of her tweets. The Guild argued that the tone and content of her tweets (e.g. “Off to work in an hour – more student mayhem”) was reinforcing the...

Early morning welcome at Exeter bus station

An 80 year old friend insisted on a journey from Madrid to Exeter via Bristol airport, arriving in Exeter at 4 am today. A taxi was booked for her, but she needed to get to it across the road. Unbidden, an employee at the bus station asked her how she was getting home and escorted her and her luggage across to the waiting Gemini taxi. Yes, I know that is what should happen - but well done to the often maligned bus station staff for looking after her so well.

Phoenix Breakfast - Ottery St Mary

I would like to talk breakfast groups. OAC Ltd have been to many breakfast group meetings in and around Exeter in our time and indeed still do. What about you? Does your MD see a regular expenses claim for breakfast, if so, what do tell him he gets for his investment? What do you, maybe as the one who spends pounds putting on the lbs every week want from breakfast meeting, is a good breakfast the whole story? I have had bad breakfasts at great breakfast meetings. What makes it work?

Do you have a regular business lunch meeting? Which time of day is best? Lets face it, if we had the...
