The Modern Checklist for Long-Term Life Planning

Many of us have an image in our heads of what old age should and will look like for us. Where we will settle, who will be in our lives, and ways in which we will occupy our time are all ideas in our heads.

Long-term life planning is no longer something to ignore until disaster strikes. With varied careers, homes, and responsibilities, your plans should reflect your real life. Preparing now and using tools like savings, wills, and opting in to life insurance reduces uncertainty and builds confidence for the future, whatever it may bring.

Women Bishops: every cloud...

Authored by Kevin Dixon

The decision by the General Synod to reject women bishops has left the Church of England in crisis.

On one side are the great and good of England’s established Church. The Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Rev Michael Langrish, was “strongly” in favour of women being appointed as bishops.

The Bishop states that "Many, right across the Church of England will be feeling stunned. The mood among all Synod members is subdued.”

"The rejection of the measure to enable women to be ordained as bishops will be a cause of disappointment, anxiety and even anger among those who...

Oh, the heartbreak and joy of moving on in life

As I told you last time, I got a job in London. And so for the last week or so I have been hurriedly packing up my Devon life and saying my goodbyes.

Two things have struck me about the packing up side: firstly how much ‘stuff’ I have accumulated over the years; and then how the most unlikely material possession can prompt such vivid memories.

Given this move is all about a new start for me, I was keen to sort my belongings and clear out the rubbish so I could start afresh. It was this desire to clear out that led me to inadvertently dumping all my jeans and trousers in a...

Summing up a year and lucky encounters

It’s very nearly that time of year. The time of year we all start trying to sum-up the year which has gone, trying to make sense of all that went on and by doing so put our minds in a place to tackle the next 12 months. How do you sum-up a year? Look back on your year, what stands out for you? Was it a good year, or a bad one - hard isn’t it?

I'm going to cheat a little here. My 2012 is so tied up in 2011 that I have to start there. During 2011 I had the fortune of meeting a great bloke. I didn’t know it at the time but the meeting was going to be a life-changing meeting....

Forget 9-5, life is for living...and pushing boundaries

Last week I wrote about how unemployment had affected me and how I got through it. One further thought came to mind in terms of survival techniques. Over the last year I have come to realise how critical it is for me to find ways of testing myself.

After years of the 9-5 (and in truth many more of the 8-7) I was looking for a bit of excitement and in the last year I’ve found a variety of ways to spice things up.

I guess the first example of this was going travelling by myself. About 2 days into my redundancy I was whinging to a friend about how bored I was...

Mary Quicke's Dairy Diary - November 2012

Leaves whirl off the trees, darkness comes early, the briefly lighter mornings darken too. The sun rises closer to the south, and at noon gets lower every day. A walk through the woods is a walk through lots of leaves, before they start breaking down to leaf litter. The last of the apples come off the trees, a rich cider smell rises, reproaching us for the apples we didn’t pick. I saw a robin, bold and curious, with that intensely sweet song, sitting on the wall in a watery gleam of sun, king in his own territory now the noisy summer visitors have gone. The fallow deer finish their rut,...

What’s the best way to procure IT support?

Networking was a bit of a theme at the Exeter and East Devon Business Club event at the Deer Park Hotel in October. Not only was there the usual networking lunch with local business professionals, but there was also a valuable presentation from Michael Mertens of Mertens Consulting on how to procure IT support to keep your critical IT networks running reliably.

During his presentation Michael exploded a few common myths and exposed some of the inappropriate advice that small businesses often receive from ‘experts’. His personal favourite was the ‘stronger aerial’ solution...

Weekend's bloodbath leaves me looking to the future

In his latest blog, Chris Whitehead, the Exeter Chiefs hooker, reflects on how retirement always looms large for the professional sportsman.

For people who love their jobs, the prospect of retirement is a frightening one and the spectre of how to provide for yourself and your family in retirement is ever-present.

In professional sport, though, it is something that hangs over your head pretty much from the moment you start your career - this must be the only profession in life where you have to find work post-retirement. If I had a pound for every time I have heard...

A 7 step Guide to creating Your Ideal Life Balance

Especially for Fellow Mums working, in business or Fulltime Mummys looking to go back to work. I am not going to keep this from you as I want you all to know that what I am telling you I speak from experience and I want to share with you my tips and techniques that helped me dramatically to get my ideal balance when my business took over my life a couple of years ago.

I am not afraid to tell you that two years ago I thought I was running a successful business and nothing else should matter. I thought as long as I did the VAT returns, logged the accounts, looked after my...

Why are the unemployed made to feel worthless?

After months of unemployment, I have got myself a job. This is great news for me but also pretty good news for you too. ‘Why?’ I hear you ask... (still single, live alone, still having make believe conversations to fill the time. You know the drill by now). Well, as you ask, this has saved you from, by my own impossibly low standards, the dullest blog ever about unemployment.

It would have started with my first trip to sign on, where a man decided to relieve himself on the Jobcentre chair. I was shocked but looking back I think perhaps he had a point. The blog would have...

Mary's October Dairy Diary... news from Home Farm

I pretend it’s not happening until autumn is right on top of us. The unstoppable, overwhelming green tide of growth turns round and meekly disappears into the ground.

We get a fiery display as the leaves drain of green, going out in a blaze of glory. Let’s hope for more of the glowing light of September to give October that incandescent quality.

The wet, cold summer gave extraordinary growth to cool country plants, and things that need warmth suffered. Fewer insects - the cows never got besieged with flies - meant that all those insect-eating birds did not...
