During the Civil War, President Lincoln was urged by a friend to give up Forts Sumter and Pickens and all government property in the Southern states. In reply, Lincoln said, “Do you remember the fable of the lion and the woodsman’s daughter?”

“Aesop writes that a lion was very much in love with a woodsman’s daughter. The fair maid referred him to her father. And the lion went to the father and asked for her hand.

“The father replied: ‘Your teeth are too long.’”

The lion went to a dentist and had them extracted. Returning, he asked again for his bride.

Flo Gets Fit Week 5: TRX and Tabata-style workout

I've had a hectic couple of weeks with work and a weekend away to London, but have still managed to fit in 3 workouts. I'm really starting to feel like my fitness is improving and Martin is incorporating more advanced exercises into the sessions.

The first session was a kettlebell and bodyweight circuit. The first time I completed the circuit I used a mixture of an 8kg and 12kg kettlebell; doing exercises such as squats, lunges, kettlebell swings, a clean and jerk lift for 30 seconds each. The circuit also incorporated bodyweight exercises such as burpees and walkouts, which...

Flo Gets Fit Week 4: Going It Alone

With Martin away working at a bootcamp, my challenge this week has been keeping up my training on my own.

Before leaving, Martin gave me a programme for me to complete in the gym. As my leg was still a bit sore at the beginning of the week, I went to a couple of spinning classes instead so I wasn't bearing any weight on it. I stayed with my gym buddy Sarah to do some weights after a class as well, just to keep up with my resistance training.

I felt confident enough to get back in the gym by Sunday and in the afternoon, managed to tear myself away from the 6 Nations to go up...

Flo Gets Fit Week 3: Burpees and Calf Strains

It's a bit of a cliche, but nobody said this was going to be easy! This week I've had my first real setback: straining my soleus (the muscle from your calf to your achilles). This, coupled with a busy weekend involving a fair amount of eating and drinking exactly what I shouldn't be, has made me feel like I've really fallen off the wagon.

All that being said, I have still managed to fit in 2 1/2 training sessions! The first this week was another circuits and resistance session. After warming up and stretching, I started with a circuit of 5 exercises; doing each for 45 seconds. The...

An antidote to the clichés of Valentine's Day gifts

Valentine's Day will soon be upon us. Shortly, everything will only be available in red, heart-shaped containers, especially chocolates! Why red, why heart-shaped and who’s ever seen a heart shaped that way anyway? I haven’t! Don’t go to the net to try and find an answer to that one by the way, there are too many counter-arguments!

We are supposed to give gifts to the ones we love. The question I have to that one is “why don’t we do that throughout the year?” “Why Valentines Day?” Again, the net doesn’t offer much help there; it’s either, a Christian martyr, a Bishop, a saint –...

St Margaret's - don't go... a message from a parent

It is so sad to hear of the potential demise of St Margaret’s School; sad for the Staff; sad for the pupils; sad for the parents. But, can you balance commercialism with upbringing – financial figures with academic statistics – results with manners? If you cannot, then the future of St Margaret’s has been written in the sand years ago.

As a father of three St Margaret’s daughters who are enjoying successful careers and lives after school and the husband of a former pupil and long standing teacher at the school, I can tell you without fear of contradiction – St Margaret’s stands for...

I've decided my life really is too short for regrets

I’ve found myself thinking about things I take for granted recently, writes our blogger, Ali.

As I write that, I realise that in that one sentence I have both started and concluded my blog. I mean, if I am thinking about them now, I can hardly claim to be taking them for granted, can I? Oh well – short and sweet. View this saved time as a reward for getting through my other musings!

As if you would get off that lightly! No, you’re here for the duration so here goes.

I guess the first thing that made me think about it was joining a sign language club at my work. We...

Flo Gets Fit Week 2: Work out until you (almost) pass out

So I’ve made it through my first proper week of fat-loss training, and just about made it to the other side! There were moments when I thought I was going to pass out and others when I thought I was going to puke, and I have never experienced post-exercise aches like I’ve had this week, but it feels amazing to know that I’ve done it!

I’ve completed two more training sessions this week, one resistance and circuit based, and another trip to the quay for more of the dreaded hill sprints.

The resistance session was made up of 2 circuits and a 10 minute boxing exercise. The...

Flo Gets Fit Week 1: Weigh-ins and Hill Sprints

Until fairly recently, my diet and fitness had taken a bit of a back seat to vodka and bacon sandwiches. But about this time last year, fed up of feeling fat and needing a week-night hobby that didn't involve Eastenders, I joined the David Lloyd gym in Exeter. And because I pay a fortune for it and signed up to a year's contract, I felt I didn't have much choice but to go!

It took me a little while to work out that getting fit didn't necessarily mean getting slim, but once I'd realised this, I signed up to the Slimming World plan to give me a bit of guidance on how to eat healthily...

Good sense from the European Court of Human Rights

Once again, claims by Christians for exemption from laws which affect everyone have been thrown out by the European Court of Human Rights. There is a consistent pattern in such cases. It is very rare for them to be upheld. One would hope that the message would be sinking in and that further expenditure on legal representation would be avoided. And yet it seems there may be another appeal.

It is very sad that there are Christians who do not seem to realise that the secular law provides protection for everyone - it is fundamentally based on that premise. There is no requirement for...
