Why Shared Beliefs Still Shape Our Deepest Relationships

Human beings are inherently social. But more than our need for companionship, it’s our shared beliefs—those often-unspoken principles, values, and worldviews—that act as the glue binding us to one another. Whether in romantic relationships, friendships, or professional bonds, shared beliefs create an unspoken alignment. They serve as the foundation of trust, predictability, and deeper understanding.

We don’t often say it outright, but we gravitate toward those who reflect our internal compass. From political ideology and faith to family values and personal growth philosophies,...

The Mother of All Questions

In August 2009, John Chambers, the CEO of IT giant Cisco, was interviewed by the New York Times. He was asked to share the questions he asked a job candidate. His most interesting one: “Who are the best people you recruited and developed and where are they today?” Everyone gives lip serive to people being the biggest resource for business. Who doesn’t sing the praises of smart hiring and management development? Chambers is saying prove it. This challenge works for any level of management in any company. Does Chambers’ question apply to young people who are entering the job market? Why...

Devon votes in County Council elections today

Candidates and party activists across the county - excluding the two unitary authorities of Plymouth and Torbay who do not have elections - have been spending the last few days and hours anxiously stuffing leaflets through letterboxes and knocking on doors in final campaigning for today's Devon County Council elections.

The County Council seats are elected every four years and last fought in 2009.

Devon County Council is currently controlled by the Conservatives under leader Councillor John Hart. The Liberal Democrats have been their traditional opposition across the region...

The real life of a female Body Builder – part 5

Authored by oakey

This is my 5th blog about my journey to compete as a figure competitor with the British National Body-Building Federation (BNBF).

Since my last blog I have been away on holiday for a week. I was able to use this as a rest/recovery week. I only trained twice for about 30 minutes, really to maintain what I had and not get out of condition. I relaxed on the nutrition as well, I didn’t go completely nuts even though I was tempted by the amount of cake and creamy deserts that were on display! I was good for the first two days, eating only meat and veg. After those initial few days,...

TED Update: Congratulations to Optix on becoming joint winners of the Employer of the Year Award alongside Rentshield Direct and to Alastair Banks for winning Entrepreneur of the Year at the Express and Echo Exeter Business Awards.

Since then, our friendly office Beagle, Charlie, has taken to YouTube to explain how you can support us. Votes will count up and into the ceremony so please do act today if you can spare a couple...

Blog from PCC Tony Hogg: "I am impressed generally by the effectiveness and commitment of officers and staff"

Wherever I go, people ask me whether I am enjoying being the Police and Crime Commissioner. I always tell them that enjoying is probably the wrong word. Relishing? Yes! Challenged? Definitely! Enjoying? I suspect that will only come when the impact of decisions I make is really felt, and Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is even safer than it already is.

I’m lucky to be PCC for this region. Yes, it’s one of the largest policing patches in the country. It faces considerable resourcing challenges to cover urban, rural and coastal issues, but I am impressed generally by the...

The arts are central to our economic and general well being, says Ben Bradshaw MP

The Culture Secretary, Maria Miller, said this week she would fight hard in the forthcoming spending review for Arts and Culture. That’s an improvement on her predecessor, Jeremy Hunt, who seemed to take pride in the size of the cuts he offered up to the Treasury and was the first Minister to settle in the last spending round.

Investment in arts and culture is tiny - less than 1% of overall Government spending. Yet it goes a long way in terms of jobs and economic growth. Sometimes wrongly seen as a fluffy luxury, arts spending is central to Britain’s economic future. Independent...

No-onecaresaboutme.com!

Is this what your website would say if it had a voice? How many of you have invested your time and in some cases, a not inconsequential amount of money, in a website only to leave it floundering out there in cyberspace fighting for its intergalactic life! Out of date information, typos, old images, missing information on built pages, outdated screen sizes, links that don’t work, no social media links and half-hearted attempts to be social, news features and blogs several months old, text-heavy content, poor visuals, the list goes on and on…

And yet, there are hundreds, if not...

New Horizons

These days I am frequently speaking to clients that are new to this world. By ‘this world’ I mean ‘investing’, and by ‘new’ I may actually mean..... err..... ‘more mature’ (bear with me and let me give you an example).

Last week I met Mr Jackson (not his real name). Mr Jackson had recently retired and had ample income from his state and employers’ pensions to cover his expenses and enough to generate a regular surplus. In addition, by virtue of his lifestyle and a regular savings habit he had built up substantial amounts in cash deposit accounts. In terms of savings, he had never...

Manage Your Time, or Others Will Do It For You!

I’ll never forget an important time management lesson I learned in a seminar many years ago . . . especially how the instructor illustrated the point.

“Okay, time for a quiz,” he said, as he pulled out a one-gallon wide-mouthed mason jar and set it on the desk in front of him. Then he produced about a dozen fist-sized rocks and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar.

When the jar was filled to the top and no more rocks would fit inside, he asked, “Is the jar full?”

Everyone in the seminar said, “Yes.”

Then he said, “Really?” He reached under the...

On the Air with Claire – A Bloggers Review

Working from home presents many challenges: What is an acceptable time to get out of bed? Which Australian soap opera should I work my lunch around? Does posting a Facebook status really count as business development? But quite possibly the biggest challenge is what boring clichéd local disc jockey should I tolerate for a couple of hours?

Whether it is the background soundtrack to my working day or the drive time escape, music plays an integral part of not only mine- but most people’s existence. Yes, I enjoy a Radio 1 chart topper as much as the next guy and sure Jeremy Vine’s...
