Surviving the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award

Authored by RosieSymes
Posted: Thu, 07/04/2013 - 1:00pm

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (commonly abbreviated to ‘D of E’) was created in 1956, 57 years ago by – you’ll never guess – the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip. It was created as citizenship training for young people in the UK aged 14-25, to improve their life experiences, employability and physical fitness.

You can do the programme at three levels, which when completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award. You achieve your Award by completing a personal programme of activities in four sections (five if you're going for Gold) - Volunteering, Physical,...

The Future of Exeter's Walk-In Centres

I recently took up an invitation from North, East & West Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NEW Devon CCG) to attend a “Have Your Say” community engagement event to help them look at the way they/we use out 2 Walk-In Centres (WIC) in Exeter – one attached to the Accident & Emergency Department at RD&E, the other on Sidwell Street in the city centre.

They wanted to know about how to make sure that we have the right level of service, in the right place, at the right time. And probably at the right price (but we’ll come to that later).

Ben Bradshw MP has pledged...

The incredible story behind a pair of blue boots

Authored by Marc Astley
Posted: Tue, 07/02/2013 - 8:30am

These are no ordinary pair of boots, and not for the reasons you may think.

The fact that they are blue makes them stand out from most footwear of a similar nature, for sure.

But what is quite extraordinary about this pair of boots is the woman who wears them.

Robyn Steward has a condition called prosapagnosia which means she does not recognise faces, but recognises people by their shoes!

Because of Robyn’s physical disabilities, she needs to wear boots, and her visual impairment makes bright colors easier to see, hence her bright shiny blue boots.

My response to today's Spending Review announcement

Authored by Ben Bradshaw
Posted: Wed, 06/26/2013 - 12:55pm

The focus of today’s Spending Review should have been clear and decisive action to boost growth and living standards this year and next year — not simply setting out cuts for two years’ time. David Cameron and George Osborne are failing to deliver on investing in infrastructure. In Exeter and the Westcountry we need that investment to boost growth and create jobs.

Exeter’s flood defences are in dire need of upgrading to protect homes, business and our rail connections. People desperately need more affordable homes for rent. As Ed Miliband revealed in Parliament today, only a tiny...

A message from the Founder of Mumazing Success, Lucy Flanagan....

Good Morning

I am so grateful for all of your lovely comments that I have received, I have been blown away by your responses.

In my last message I shared with you a little of my story, which certainly resonated with many of you.

The road to the Recharge and Achieve More Day I have had quite a lot of problems in just putting this event on. One of the issues that people kept raising was the price of the day.

I was talking to someone only the other day who saw the price of the day as...

Dangerous Dogs - Getting to the root of the problem

"Children are still being mauled by dogs, assistance dogs are being attacked by out of control aggressive dogs, and innocent members of the public out walking their dogs are being intimidated by youths with the so called 'status dogs'!" says Tricia Wills, ( www.triciawills.co.uk ) a dog trainer and behaviourist, based in Exeter.

A government spokesman is saying that "urgent action" is needed to protect the public from dangerous dogs. But what is this all going to amount to?

Although the government plans to crack down hard on these grey areas (described here by the BBC on 9...
