WITCH - an original historical drama

Circle of Spears Productions are bring their acclaimed play WITCH to Torbay for the first time. Based on original witness evidence from a 1687 Dorset witch trial, WITCH examines the perils of being a woman alone in the early modern era. It's an emotive piece about witchcraft trials which contains neither a trial nor any witchcraft - instead it looks at the interpersonal relationships of those involved and focuses on the human story behind such accusations. The case is examined purely from a social history perspective to highlight how easily an accusation of witchcraft could arise against someone who was “other” – particularly a woman in a patriarchal society. Audience feedback includes "Powerful stuff - 4 stars" - Remotegoat "Utterly compelling throughout" "Beautifully researched" "An emotional and provocative watch" "Heart-breakingly real" "Moved me to tears" 1580s England – Thomas Latimer has accused his destitute neighbour Margery Scrope of witchcraft. But does he really believe she is a witch, or does he have a darker purpose? And what will magistrate Sir William Tyrell make of the case? Is Margery guilty – and, if so, of what? Whatever you believe, a woman’s life is on the line…
