Herbert's songs are populated by a living, breathing cast of beaten-down dreamers, jaded city-dwellers, and women in a quandary, and have the critics in a fizz, scrambling for comparisons with Lennon and McCartney, Nina Simone, the Kinks and Tom Waits.
