A real highlight of Exeter School’s musical year will be held in Exeter Cathedral this month.

The Choral Society concert takes place on Thursday 20 March 2014 at 7.30pm.

The Choral Society, comprising about 130 pupils alongside parents, staff and friends of Exeter School, will be accompanied by a full professional orchestra, with pupils taking the lion’s share of the solo work.

They will perform Vivaldi’s Gloria, Finzi's Ceremonial Ode to St Cecilia, Vaughan Williams’ Serenade to Music, and members of Symphony Orchestra will join the professional orchestra to perform Shostakovich’s Festive Overture.

Director of Music Peter Tamblyn said: “We often take risks with new and unusual music, and this performance will be no exception. It is always a pleasure to hear singers, orchestral players, and audience members mention how rewarding it has been to broaden their listening at our concerts.

“I am hugely proud that a number of pupils are singing and playing the solos, many for the first time in such a large venue with a professional orchestra. I am also very grateful that the orchestral members will allow so many of our young orchestral musicians to sit in with them for the performance of this work.”

This year’s soloists are Upper Sixth Formers Jack Wride (Bass), Izzy Gibber (Soprano), Freddie Crowley (Bass) and Lower Sixth Former Clara Finnigan (Soprano) performing Vivaldi’s Gloria. Professional soloist, Peter Wilman, will perform Finzi’s For St Cecilia: Ceremonial Ode.

There are still some tickets available from Exeter School’s Box Office.
