This ancient West Country Fair has taken place each year under Royal Charter signed by King Henry 111 in 1253 and is run on a ‘not for profit basis’ by a Committee with volunteer helpers.

Programme - Times and venues vary each day with different things happening all the time.

The Chulmleigh Old Fair opens on the evening of Tuesday 22nd or the next Tuesday following the 22nd of July as decreed by the Charter when the White Glove is displayed outside the Town Hall at the opening ceremony. The Fair Queen, previously chosen by public ballot, is crowned then coins are thrown from an upper window of the Town Hall for children to scramble in the street below. Coins are no longer heated until red hot as was the traditional case for the Money Scramble. All visitors are welcome to join in

Wednesday is the main fair day with a Craft & Country Market in the streets, some closed to traffic, A Flower Festival which continues all week. Sheep Show, Vintage Vehicles, Flower Show, Dog Show held on a nearby field with entry fee of £1.50 per adult Children Free. Pavement Artists Competition, Golf Challenge at golf course.

Thursday is mainly a Sports Day for All with money prizes, field sports, Tennis and Badminton Tournament for juniors. There is also a local history walk led by the Town Crier in the afternoon and a children’s party in the evening.

Friday is mainly a ‘horsey day’ with a morning Horse Show,afternoon Gymkhana and a Car and Horsey Boot Sale held on a local field. Antiques Afternoon in the Town Hall, Clay Pigeon Shoot and Six a Side Football in the evening.

Saturday – Fancy Dress Parade, Street Entertainment, Fun and Games in the Street including sticky bun race, apple bobbing, ski race etc. Tug of War, Open Road Race ending with dancing in the street.
