Lots to do for teenagers in Exeter
Did you know that in Exeter, in twelve months, there has been a 36% increase in the number of teenagers involved in Explorer Units (boys and girls aged 14 to 17)? There is also a waiting list of people wanting to join, which is the first time in 25 years.
The reason for the increase is due to the tremendous programmes the Units run, which are shaped by the young people in the Unit. The increase is also due to the brilliant programmes that are offered to Scouts (boys and girls aged 10 to 14). This means they are staying involved and want to move on to Explorers. With over 250 activities there is something for everyone. With potential items on the programme running from air activities to caving, digital maker to leadership and media relations to water activities, there are lots of opportunities to try something different.
Due to the demand for places, an Air Scout Unit and a Sea Scout Unit have been established recently. There is also a Land Unit.
Volunteer Richard said, “In Explorers, the young people are very involved in planning the programme and sometimes running the evening. This helps them develop independence, leadership, problem solving, responsibility, self-confidence and team-work skills.” He added, “These skills will help them when they are applying for apprenticeship, college, employment or university.”
For further information about any of the sections, Squirrels (boys and girls aged 4 to 6), Beavers (boys and girls aged 6 to 8), Cubs (boys and girls aged 8 to 10), Scouts or Explorers please visit Exeter District Scouts
