Three years after its launch, the Exeter PA Network has experienced strong growth, highlighting an appetite amongst PAs and support staff for training and development.

As the only group of its kind in the city, the Network fills the gap left by recession led training budget cuts – providing regular events with the specific aim of increasing opportunities for career development and networking.

The latest event, hosted by The Met Office, attracted 70 delegates, where PAs heard from Ian Caldecourt of training consultancy Hemsley Fraser, on how to maximise opportunities at...

Budget Bites by Haines Watts

Pensions & Savings

Business owners will be disappointed that the Chancellor has reduced the amount they can save for retirement over their lifetime from £1.25m to £1m. Only a few years ago, the lifetime limit was £1.8m - so this represents a massive reduction in the ability to save for retirement. The good news is that the annual allowance has not reduced as was feared, so the opportunity still exists to save a significant sum this year. Business owners may want to use this year’s allowance and any unused allowance for the last three years prior to the year end, rather than...

Chancellor's 'kitchen sink' budget!

We might have expected George Osborne to throw everything but the kitchen sink at today. Instead, he provided us with a fully funded budget, and didn't spend the money on cheap giveaways. How very grown up of him - but he's kept plenty of wriggle room to offer some stunning manifesto pledges on IHT. At current interest rates cash ISAs were fairly pointless before, but now are likely to be unnecessary for the vast majority of savers. The new £1,000 tax allowance for savers means you’d need to have cash savings of more than £100,000 at one per cent interest to need to shelter any of it from...

Business rates review launched

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Danny Alexander, has launched the most wide-ranging review of national business rates in a generation – paving the way for changes to how businesses across England pay the tax.

The review, set to report back by Budget 2016, will examine the structure of the current system which is paid annually on 1.8 million properties in England. The review will look at how businesses use property, what the UK can learn from other countries about local business taxes, and how we could modernise the system so it better reflects changes in the value of property...

Exeter workers are masters of many trades

More than half of Exeter professionals (55%) say they are seeing more people in their industry with multiple jobs compared to five years ago.

These ‘portfolio job holders’ work for more than one employer, potentially offering more than one service. This is a key finding of recent research from Regus, the world’s largest provider of flexible workspace. The survey canvassed the opinions of business owners and senior managers in Exeter on their attitudes and approaches to work.

The findings show that working practices have changed considerably, even in as little as five years...
