House prices rise but supply falls

House prices in the South West jumped sharply in May, despite the number of homes per UK surveyor falling to a record low since the data series began in January 1978, according to the latest RICS UK Residential Market Survey.

While 46% more surveyors saw prices rise in May (the same month in which the Nationwide Building Society estimated that the average price of a home in the UK has now climbed to £195,000), supply to the market declined for the fourth consecutive month with 22% more surveyors reporting a drop in new instructions.

Devon's budget in the black for 24th consecutive year

Devon County Council’s budget is in the black for the 24th consecutive year.

The outturn for the 2014/15 financial year shows an underspend of £49,000 on a net revenue budget of £513.7million.

Devon’s deputy leader John Clatworthy, who is the Cabinet member responsible for finance, congratulated county treasurer Mary Davis and her staff on delivering the budget on target in difficult economic conditions.

“This is a good result,” he said. “This is the 24th year that the budget has been delivered on target.

Rainbow Living launches support for Learning Disability Week 2015

Exeter-based charity Rainbow Living are proud to be supporting Learning Disability Week 2015, taking place 15-21 June, and are encouraging people in Devon to ‘Hear My Voice’ as some of the people the charity supports share their stories to help raise awareness of learning disability.

On Thursday 11th June, a team of executives from Exeter Family Friendly will launch the start of awareness about LDW by cycling 72 miles for Rainbow Living, stopping on route at Exeter Family’s offices to launch the week with Rainbow Living and the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Lesley Robson.

For the first time, AnTech Ltd has held a day of celebration to recognise successes throughout the company.

Last week, over 50 staff and guests gathered to celebrate over 115 years of long service, international patents and internal departmental achievements at the company’s head office in Exeter.

AnTech’s in-house team organised and designed awards to commemorate individuals that have in particular helped bring the company to its success. A marquee was constructed and decorated with marketing materials ranging back over the 23 years the company has been in business....

NHS hearing clinic to open in Exeter

Exeter residents are set to benefit from easier access to free hearing services as of July, with the launch of the first ever Chime Health city centre NHS audiology service.

Due to open in Exeter’s Harlequins Shopping Centre, Chime’s new clinic led by branch manager Sam Humphries will be open six days a week from 8.45am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday.

Ambulance service to recruit paramedics from Czech Republic and Slovakia

South Western Ambulance Service has started a recruitment campaign to attract around twenty qualified paramedics from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

A national shortage of qualified paramedics in England means that previous recruitment campaigns have not produced the number of paramedics required across the South West.

Computer screens built into contact lenses and electronics in our skin will be commonplace in a few years, according to futurologist Dr Ian Pearson.

Dr Pearson, the inventor of the text message, was speaking at a conference organised by Invest in Exeter at the city’s new Science Park Centre, which was showcasing the area as a location for inward investment.

He predicted active contact lenses will mean: “You will be able to watch TV with your eyes closed or read emails first thing in the morning without reaching for a gadget.”
