Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

The biggest challenges facing SMEs

Research by BSI (British Standards Institution) has revealed that almost half of SMEs (small and medium enterprises) don’t feel that their business is operating efficiently.

The survey which targeted 250 SMEs throughout the UK with between 1-250 employees, also highlighted that the highest number of businesses that showed concern about operating efficiently were based in East Anglia, Scotland and Yorkshire and the Humber. Around 60% of businesses in these regions highlighted this as a challenge for their company.

In a 2006 piece by the Sunday Times, it was estimated 14% of the money transfers in the UK are handled via designated foreign exchange companies. It’s virtually impossible to verify current usage figures without having access to resources like the Sunday Times has, but it is safe to assume the number is much greater than that.

CCTV appeal after sexual assault on train

Update: 23 September: Police investigating a sexual assault, which happened on a train between Taunton and Exeter on 15 July, have arrested a man in connection with the matter.

The 36-year-old from Bideford was arrested yesterday (23 September) on suspicion of sexual assault. He was later released on police bail pending further inquiries.

The man came forward following a media appeal to trace a person detectives wanted to speak to about the incident. Officers would like to thank all those who shared the appeal.

One of Exeter’s leading law firms has become a dementia friendly firm and joined the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance. Stephens Scown LLP, which has offices in Exeter, Truro and St Austell, is one of the first law firms to join the alliance in Exeter, which now has 22 corporate members including Barclays Bank, The Met Office, Age UK Exeter and Alzheimer’s Society – Devon.
