Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

Police appeal following burglary in Exmouth

Police investigating a burglary at a property in Exmouth last week are appealing for information.

A property on Valley Way was broken into sometime between 5.50pm and 10.15pm on Friday 9 October.

Jewellery, which is of great sentimental value to the victim, was stolen during the burglary.

Devon groups share Lottery millions

More than 70 community projects across the South West will be helping local people improve their communities after the Big Lottery Fund awarded a total of £1,987,817 to the region.

Property set for investment rise in Exeter

Property investments are set to rise in Exeter following changes in pension laws with leading housebuilder Barratt Homes already reporting increased interest.

A recent survey by the five star housebuilder revealed that 43 per cent of people would consider property if they were looking to invest £25,000,’’ said Barratt Homes sales director Sara Parker. “And the survey showed that more than 50 per cent believe property is a safer investment than shares.”

Warning over latest computer software scam

Police are warning residents about the latest scam that has seen some victims duped out of thousands of pounds.

Computer Software Service Fraud, also known as the Microsoft Tech Scam, relates to predominantly Indian call centres cold calling victims claiming to be from legitimate businesses, such as Microsoft.

The caller states that there is an issue with the victim’s computer, which they say they will fix for a fee.

County Hall needs ‘more power’ to tackle deprivation

Council leader Councilor John Hart says that if the authority had more power and a fairer funding deal from Whitehall, it could better tackle youth employment, low pay and deprivation in the county.

Cllr Hart’s comments follow the release of the English Indices of Deprivation Report 2015 by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The report measures relative levels of deprivation in 32,844 neighbourhoods in England, cross referencing income, employment, education and skills, health and disability, crime, barriers to housing and services and environment....

Thank You Exeter! More than 100 local businesses, schools and organisation took part in our Bring a £1 Day.

You may have seen our fundraising team at Princesshay, wearing our new logo t-shirts and standing by our giant big pink collecting hat, kindly made by Brightsea Printers.

Lots of people said hello and donated a £1 and some local businesses came by to pop their staff collection into our Hospiscare hat. Children were intrigued to peer into the hat. Radio Exe and singer Jimmy Ireland joined us during the day to liven up the event.
