Generous friends, family and strangers have raised an incredible £62,000 for a dying Exeter mum - in a matter of weeks.

Jo Smith is currently travelling with her best friend Sarah Lacey to Arizona by sea and land in a desperate bid to find a cure for her two terminal conditions.

She needs £70,000 for the trip and her treatment and her YOUCARING site is now close to the target.

A friend of Jo told the Exeter Daily she would be bowled over by the amount raised.

Huge pay gap between east and west of SW region

There is a huge pay gap between workers living in the East and West of the South West region, with the people living in the East amongst the best paid in the country, earning up to £12,500 more than those living in the West, where earnings are well below the national average.

Record bookings for Exeter's Southgate

A popular city hotel is experiencing a record number of bookings from across Devon this Christmas.

The Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel will be hosting a number of party nights over the Christmas period with a Roaring 20’s theme.

Currently, the hotel is expecting over 3,500 guests, almost double the amount of guests who attended the Moulin Rouge themed parties last year.

Guests will be greeted upon arrival with a complimentary drink followed by a three course festive dinner. The event will also include a disco, complete with a DJ and photo booth.

Work to start at Turks Head Junction

Improvements to Turks Head Junction in Honiton will get underway on Monday (9 November).

The current T-junction meets Exeter Road to connect the western end of Honiton to the A30 dual carriageway.

The scheme will change the existing layout to a mini roundabout, along with a zebra crossing on Exeter Road. The overall improvements will reduce traffic queues which can, at times, reach the A30 and create a safety problem.

The work will take 20 weeks, continuing until the end of March, but it is scheduled to be complete before the Easter holidays.

Stagecoach invests £2.5m in luxury vehicles

Monday 23 November sees Stagecoach’s flagship brand, Stagecoach Gold, introduced on route 57, which connects Exeter and Exmouth with Topsham, Lympstone and Brixington.

The local operator has invested £2.5m in 11 new vehicles, all of which feature free Wi-Fi and USB charging, as well as leather seats with extra legroom, giving customers a luxury travel experience between city and sea.

Overnight closures for work on A361

Two overnight road closures will be carried out this month as part of the ongoing major refurbishment of the Rive Exe Viaduct on the A361.

The scheme, which involves replacing the failed expansion joint and waterproofing the bridge deck of the structure west of Bolham Roundabout in Tiverton, is reaching the half way point.

Work on the eastbound carriageway is due to be complete next week (w/c Monday 9 November) and the upcoming night-time closures will enable the contractor to safely switch to the westbound carriageway.
