Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029 

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

East Devon’s bathing waters cleaner than ever

The bathing waters at East Devon’s eight beaches have all passed the new stringent testing standards set by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The announcement of the 2015 bathing water quality results, which was made by Defra earlier today, revealed that four of the district’s beaches received an Excellent classification – which is the highest and cleanest class, while three received a Good water quality rating and one, Ladram Bay (which is privately owned and managed) a Sufficient rating.

A major food company which was devastated by flooding is calling on other businesses to take action to prepare for severe weather.

Greencore is urging businesses to make sure they know their flood risk as the Environment Agency launches its annual Flood Action campaign,

Luxury jeweller Fraser Hart in Drake Mall, Plymouth, has more than enough style to take on James Bond – and share the limelight with the British spy in his latest outing as 007.

Spectre’s premiere was the springboard for Omega to launch its limited Bond edition watches.

Omega and the iconic 007 character have long associations: James Bond has worn an Omega watch since Pierce Brosnan embodied him in GoldenEye in 1995.

Michelmores has risen seven places in The Lawyer's UK 200 Annual Report, achieving record turnover of £30.1 million for 2014/15 − a 15% increase on the previous financial year. The annual report, which ranks UK law firms by levels of turnover, placed the firm in 82nd position.

Michelmores has increased its international activity over the last 12 months, which now accounts for approximately 15% of total revenue. This has been supported by its involvement in YangTze Law, the UK's first wholly Chinese-owned law firm – an exciting new development for the firm.

Tax exemption available to businesses for Christmas parties

While Christmas might still be two months away, many businesses will already be planning their annual celebration. ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) is determined to bring a little more seasonal cheer by reminding all businesses of the tax exemption available for annual parties.

Employers can claim a tax exemption providing the cost of the event, including VAT, does not exceed £150 per head. It is important to note that this is a tax exemption, not an allowance.

Cabinet consider new organisation to run Devon’s libraries

The creation of a new independent organisation to run Devon’s libraries could be given the green light next week.

Devon County Council’s Cabinet will consider final plans to establish a new ‘public service mutual’, which will run the library service from 1 April 2016.

The County Council will remain responsible for the library service, but will commission the delivery of the service from the new organisation, which will be owned by library staff and the community and managed by a Chief Executive and Board of Trustees.

Poll reveals parents’ concern over children’s lack of wildlife experiences

Evidence has been growing for a number of years pointing to the health and social benefits to be derived from contact with the natural world for all ages. However, results from a new YouGov poll, commissioned by The Wildlife Trusts, highlight the discrepancy between what parents think is best for children and what they actually experience.

Finance chiefs target overheating budget

A top-level working party of senior county councillors has been set up to stop Devon’s budget for People services overheating further.

The latest estimates show the budget is overspending by £9.1 million.

The increase in the last two months is mainly due to extra spending of £1.8 million on children in care.

The new working party is headed by deputy leader John Clatworthy, who is also the Cabinet member responsible for finance.

He will be joined by the Cabinet members for children’s services, James McInnes, and adult services, Stuart Barker.
