Exeter announces its bid to become the UK’s City of Culture in 2029

Exeter City Council has today announced it will be submitting an expression of interest (EOI) for the prestigious UK City of Culture title. 

The City of Culture bid follows the culmination of five months extensive engagement and consultation with artists, creatives, cultural organisations and residents to shape the council’s commissioned new five-year Cultural Strategy for Exeter.

Exeter academics recognised

Two rising research stars at the University of Exeter have been recognised by each receiving a highly prestigious Philip Leverhulme Prize.

Climate scientist Dr James Screen and optical physicist Dr Jacopo Bertolotti have both been awarded prizes of £100,000 towards their continued research, in recognition of their respective work on rapid Arctic climate change and light scattering in fundamental physics.

Hundreds of people flocked to see Exeter's Christmas lights being switched on.

Entertainment was provided by the Exeter University Jazz Orchestra, pantomime performances from Wonder Productions and Pinhoe Pantomime cast and the sounds of the Exeter Universities A-Capella groups.

Charity wins top award for green education

Devon Wildlife Trust is the 2015 recipient of the Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI) Environmental Education Award.

Council critical of Pay to Stay housing scheme

A government scheme to make social housing tenants pay higher rents if they are earning more, has come under criticism from Exeter City Council.

The City Council has been critical of the Pay to Stay scheme which is due to be introduced from April 2017. The Council believes there should be greater freedom for local authorities to decide on the level of rents and not be dictated from by central government.

Carpet cleaner pleads guilty to fraud

A trader who travelled the country offering to clean householder’s carpets, including that of a vulnerable dementia sufferer, for rock-bottom prices before hiking his charges by up to 5,400 per cent has plead guilty to seven offences.

On 18th November, 2015 at Exeter Magistrates Court, just before a three day trial was scheduled to start, Mark Dudley of Humber Road, Ferndown, changed his pleas to guilty on four offences under the Fraud Act and three offences under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations.

Golfing day raises £2,742 for Hospiscare

A golf day, organised by the Mears Ltd - Exeter Branch part of Mears Group PLC, has raised £2,742 for us. Eighteen teams took part in the Mears Ltd South West Regional Golf Day which was held at Woodbury Park.

The day was organised by Philip Taverner, Mears Ltd general manager for Devon and Cornwall. The £5,000 cash prize for a hole in one on the 18th offered by Mears Ltd wasn’t won, although two golfers did get very close! The winning team was the team entered by Philip Bruford of PJ Bruford Decorating Ltd and the day ended with a separate dinner and dance.

A budding student researcher is among the first from Exeter to secure a prestigious undergraduate placement at the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company.

Adam Harris, a BSc Medical Sciences student from the University of Exeter Medical School, has obtained a one year industrial placement at Eli Lilly’s UK base in Surrey.

City's new leisure plans go on show

A public exhibition at Exeter’s Guildhall will show progress on plans to deliver a new sustainable Leisure Centre to replace Pyramids in the heart of the city.

Exeter Active, the City Council’s leisure centre project, is taking shape, and initial designs for the complex will go on display at the Guildhall at the end of this month (November).
