Exeter CAB reports huge rise in people seeking advice

Leading local advice charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, has published its advice trend statistics for the period 1 April – 31 December 2015.

The charity has helped 5,998 people directly with their advice and information needs, an increase of 34% on the same period year.

The trends in the amount of advice that the charity has been able to provide compared to the same period in 2014, was as follows:

This year’s Devon County Show on May 19th, 20th and 21st promises to be an ‘entertainment extravaganza’.

Exeter Bus Station redevelopment approved

Outline planning permission was granted last night (Wednesday 20 January) for the redevelopment of Exeter Bus & Coach Station.

The site in Paris Street is to be demolished to provide a new bus station, retail/leisure mixed use development and Leisure Centre.

The Princesshay Partnership - a collaboration of The Crown Estate and TH Real Estate - is delivering the retail/leisure development, while the City Council is providing the new bus station and Leisure Centre.

Car crashes into house in East Devon

Building control officers from East Devon District Council were called in to assist the emergency services when a car came off the road and was left embedded in the side of a house.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning (20 January) in Fluxton near Ottery St Mary just before 10.30am.

Police and fire services called in the council’s building control team to advise on the structural damage to the property.

Crime continues to fall across Devon & Cornwall

The latest figures for 2015 shows that crime continues to fall across Devon and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Recorded figures for January to December 2015 showed a decrease of 4.9% or 3,998 fewer offences compared to 2014, with reductions across a number of crime groups. The updated picture shows the Force continues to see reductions in public order offences (down by -12.4%), vehicle crime (-11.4%), theft (-12.8%), and criminal damage has fallen by 6.6%.

East Devon District Council and the Environment Agency are working together to reduce the risk of flooding from extreme sea levels in the Camperdown area of Exmouth.

Police and Crime Commissioner learns more about police drones

Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg this week met with police officers from Devon and Cornwall Police and the National Police Air Service (NPAS) to learn about the benefits of drones for policing.

Devon and Cornwall Police has been trialling the use of drones to aid police work since early November 2015.

The force currently has two drones in operation, which have been used at a number of major incidents across the two counties.
