Pinhoe library to receive free WI-FI

An Exeter library is one of the selected locations to be a part of BT and Barclay’s innovative community based programme.

In March 2015 BT and Barclay’s joined together to promote a scheme in which 100 libraries around the UK will receive free WI-FI.

BT found 80 percent of people in the south west rely on the internet for local community involvement, and Exeter’s Pinhoe Library is to receive free WI-FI to boost this.

Heart of the South West devolution partners to consider Combined Authority

Councils across Devon and Somerset have been reassured that their devolution proposals do not require an elected mayor.

At a recent summit meeting with council leaders, Local Government Secretary Greg Clark said Government would not impose an elected Mayor as part of any Heart of the South West (HotSW) Devolution Partnership deal.

New powers would instead be overseen by a Combined Authority consisting of representatives of Devon and Somerset county councils, Plymouth and Torbay councils, the 13 district councils in the two counties and Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks....

Better journeys on the way for SW rail passengers

Plans to give rail passengers along the South Western network more trains, more space and faster journeys were today (4 July) announced by Rail Minister Claire Perry. The Department for Transport has published documents setting out how bidders for the new South Western franchise will be required to provide plans for:

  • At least 95 additional services on weekdays from December 2018.
  • A doubling of services along the London Waterloo to Reading and Waterloo to Windsor & Eton Riverside routes from two to four trains an hour.

Three dairy champions have been recognised for their hard work within the industry.

Heather Wheeler, MP for south Derbyshire and Neil Parish, MP for Tiverton and Honiton have both been awarded the annual Dairy UK award for their support of UK dairy farmers.

Heather Wheeler chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Dairy. Neil Parish chairs the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Select Committee and is former chair of the Dairy APPG.

Devon Contract Waste signs £2.5m Princess Yachts deal

An Exeter-based waste management business, Devon Contract Waste, has secured a contract with Princess Yachts worth around £2.5million to manage the British luxury yacht manufacturer’s waste for the next three years.

The new contract will mean the majority of the commercial waste collected from six of Princess Yachts’ Plymouth sites – home to 2,050 staff – will be managed by Devon Contract Waste’s Zero to Landfill service which is unique in the South West. A family are looking for a 47 Year old man who has gone missing.

Steve Rose from Chesterfield in Derbyshire was last seen in Exeter on 16 June 2016.

His family and friends are appealing to anyone who have seen him or may know where he is.

Package of measures suggested to help South West businesses

A leading tax accountant is calling for a package of measures to help businesses in the South West following the UK's historic decision to leave the European Union.

Third economic well-being survey launched

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, today launches its third economic well-being survey.

The survey, in partnership with the Express and Echo, Radio Exe, Exeter City Council and Exeter Chamber of Commerce, will highlight the current financial and employment situation in Exeter. It will help Citizens Advice Exeter to highlight trends with policy-makers and to further tailor their advice and information resources to meet the needs of local people.
