Mothers angry about cuts to breastfeeding services to petition Devon County Council

A group of mothers who attend West Exe Children's Centre have led a formidable campaign to save staff and services from cuts at the centre.

They will present a petition of over 600 signatories to a full Devon County Council (DCC) meeting tomorrow (Thursday 28th July), at 2.15pm.

The petition calls for Devon County Council, who ultimately fund the city's Children's Centres, to halt the cuts in breastfeeding support and educational play sessions in West Exe.

Railway trespass doubles over holidays

Parents in the South West are being urged to speak to their children as alarming new figures reveal youngsters are twice as likely to trespass on the tracks over summer, compared with winter.

Longer evenings, coupled with the start of the holidays, spell danger for Britain’s youth as UK statistics show trespass doubles in August compared to December.

In 2015, there were 128 reports of trespass across the region during the summer, resulting in 4694 minutes of delays to passengers.

Police seek witnesses to Newton Abbot assault

Police are seeking witnesses to an assault that happened at the taxi rank near Lloyds bank, Newton Abbot on Wednesday 4th May 2016 at around 6.20pm.

A man was assaulted, and police believe these two men may be able to help them with their enquiries into the incident.

If you recognise them, or recall seeing them and where they were going at around the time of the assault, police would be very keen to hear from you.

A knockout day of charity fun

It’s A Knockout is coming back to raise money for FORCE Cancer Charity and there are still team places available for the fiesta of fun on Saturday September 3 at Topsham Rugby Club.

Up to 72 teams of 10 will be taking part in games based on the popular TV show with huge, colourful inflatables, crazy costumes, comical props, water and plenty of bubbles.

The 2015 event was a great success as businesses, clubs and groups of friends tackled the 12-game spectacular in fancy dress costumes including cavemen, Hawaiian hula dancers, bumblebees and Minions.

More Exeter areas lose overnight street lighting

Around 780 streetlights will be switched off overnight in some residential streets in Topsham and the St Loyes area of Exeter from Monday 1 August.

The streetlights have been converted to part-night lighting. Previously they would have been on all-night, but will now be switched off from about 12:30am to 5:30am, before coming on again until dawn. The change is part of Devon County Council’s on-going programme to reduce costs and carbon emissions across the county.

On Thursday 21 July the Ashfords Burgh Island Swim took place at Bigbury-on-Sea in South Devon from 6pm organised by national law firm, Ashfords LLP.

The event saw over 75 courageous participants swim for approximately 1 mile in open water around the iconic Devon beauty spot Burgh Island, raising as much money as possible for charity.

All money raised from the swim will go to the event's three selected charities: Parkinson's UK, Exeter City FC Football in the Community and Surf Life Saving GB.

Northcott Beaton, one of Devon’s top insurance companies, has launched a new affinity scheme designed to raise funds for charities and community groups across Devon.

The Exeter Leukaemia Fund is the first charity to sign up to the Free Tenners scheme which will enable charity supporters to raise funds through the purchase of day-to-day insurance products.

The South Devon Link Road project has won two awards at a major regional industry award ceremony, held on Friday 8 July.

The project was presented with the ‘South West Project over £1 million’ award and the ‘People’s Choice award’ at the Institution of Civil Engineering (ICE) South West annual awards.

Devon County Council collected the award on behalf of the project team, which also comprised Torbay Council, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff, construction company Galliford Try and their designer Ramboll.

Teignbridge has introduced new on-the-spot fines of £400 to reduce fly-tipping offences in the district.

The new get-tough powers to issue fixed penalty notices for small-scale fly-tipping offences by an individual or companies came into force following a delegated decision by Teignbridge’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing Cllr Sylvia Russell.
