Firefighters are battling to save Exeter's historic Royal Clarence Hotel after fire spread to its roof.

Crews have been tackling a major blaze, which is believed to have started at an art gallery in Cathedral Close, since 5am today (28 October).

Police are in attendance to support Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service personnel while they continue work in relation to the fire at The Gallery on Exeter's Cathedral Green.

A30 closed after crash involving lorry

Police alerted shortly after 2am on Friday 28th October 2016 to a collision involving two vehicles on the A30 Westbound at the Woodleigh junction, Cheriton Bishop.

The vehicles involved were an articulated lorry, which had overturned onto its side and currently blocks the carriageway and a Mercedes estate car.

The road was initially closed in both directions with assistance from the Highways Agency.

Fire and ambulance services attended.

Dozens of firefighters are tackling a blaze at a building in Exeter city centre.

Police were alerted by the fire service at 5.20am (Friday 28 October 2016) to a large fire towards the South Street end of Exeter High Street.

The fire is involving The Royal Clarence Hotel and the Waterstones Shop and has been declared as a 'major Incident' by the fire service.

The Royal Clarence Hotel has been evacuated as a precaution, and all staff and residents are accounted for.

Police are increasingly concerned for the welfare of 77-year-old Lesley Roger Irish, who has been missing from the Heavitree area of Exeter since Tuesday 25th October 2016.

He last made contact with his family on the evening of Monday 24th October. His disappearance is out of character.

Mr Irish is described as white, 5’ 5” tall and of very slight build. He has short thin grey hair, bald on top. He is likely to be wearing a coat, walking boots and rucksack.

He may be driving a 7-year-old red Mitsubishi Colt saloon with registration WG62 DWM.

The latest group of young people in Devon have taken part in a Rugby World Cup Legacy programme.

The Business Empowering Employment Programme (BEEP) gives 16-24 year olds the confidence and skills to secure jobs and training opportunities.

Eight youngsters have completed an initial two-week course run by Motiv-8sw and were presented with their certificates at a celebration event on Friday (Oct 21) by radio and television broadcaster Judi Spiers.
