Local small businesses across the South West are gearing up to take their share of a much-needed Christmas boost, as new data predicts the UK could spend £5.3 billion with small firms over the festive period, delivering critical end-of-year gains for this vital segment of the economy.

Football team with a difference targets weight loss goals

EXETER health and wellbeing charity, CITY Community Trust is aiming to help local men score their weight loss goals in 2018 - through an innovative football league.

The charity has partnered with Get Active Exeter to launch MAN v FAT, an FA-endorsed football league for UK men who are overweight or obese.

It is the first time the incredibly successful weight loss league has been operated in Exeter and those taking part will get to play on Exeter City Football Club’s 3G pitch at its Cliff Hill training ground.

Seven lawyers with Devon based law firm Wollen Michelmore LLP have been promoted to Associate status within the practice. The appointments bring the total number of Associates within the firm to 17 and follow the appointment of eight new Associates in 2017.

Blue plaque honours animal hero and her owner

Exeter’s animal hero, the valiant pigeon Mary of Exeter, and her owner, Cecil “Charlie” Brewer, will be honoured on Saturday 20 January 2018 by the unveiling of a blue plaque at her owner’s former home in West Street.

Mary, part of the National Pigeon Service during the Second World War, carried top secret military messages across the English Channel to her pigeon loft behind Charlie’s bootmaker’s workshop. She was awarded the Dickin Medal, the highest award for animal bravery.

Thousands raised for Princesshay’s charity of the year

Princesshay has announced it has raised more than £17,000 for its charity of the year, Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

A car raffle in partnership with Snows Toyota & Lexus Exeter raised over £11,200 alone for the charity, with the winning ticket drawn on 23rd December of the brand new car.

Man found dead in Exeter identified

An man who was found dead at a property on Mount Pleasant Road in Exeter has been identified as 31-year-old Daniel Sandu.

Police were notified at around 5.50am on Friday 12 January 2018 to the address in Exeter. The man has been formally identified and his next of kin are aware.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained pending further enquiries.

The 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and has been bailed until the 9th of February 2018.

Stark funding gap remains between schools in Devon and London

Education chiefs in Devon are renewing their campaign for fair funding for schools with a detailed dossier on the stark funding gap that still exists with the South East.

They’ve produced figures for Devon schools detailing how much better off they would be if they were situated in London.

And they’re being delivered to Devon MPs by the county’s schools chiefs on a visit to Westminster tomorrow. (Tues)

The Government’s new national funding formula will mean an extra £7.5 million for schools in Devon next year.
