Plans to create a new leisure centre and bus station in the city centre have taken a step forward. Councillors last night (30 January) backed a recommendation which would see the current bus station continue to operate as normal until May.

Exeter's economy is booming

Exeter had the tenth highest growth in private sector jobs in the UK last year, a new report has revealed. The Centre for Cities Outlook 2018 report shows an increase of 3,000 jobs in Exeter – a 5.1% increase on the previous year. The highly-regarded report also tracks Exeter as the second fastest growing city by population in the UK, with only Coventry ahead of the South West capital. Leading local advice charity Citizens Advice Exeter, has today released its advice trend statistics for the period 1 April – 31st December 2017.

The charity has helped 7448 people directly with advice and information since 1 April. The overall advice trends, compared to the same period in the previous year, were as follows:

Overall, the charity saw a 4.8% increase in employment enquiries. The main changes being:

South West sees increase in 2017 profit warnings

Listed companies in the South West issued a total of 21 profit warnings in 2017, up from 18 in 2016. The final quarter of 2017 saw five profit warnings, compared to six in the same quarter of 2016, according to EY’s latest Profit Warnings report. FTSE and AIM-listed support services and travel & leisure companies in the South West issued the most warnings with six each in 2017. Across the UK, the total number of profit warnings in 2017 (276) was comparable with 2016 when 283 warnings were issued. Work to repair footpaths along Pinhoe Road to start next week

Footpaths along Pinhoe Road in Exeter are due to be repaired, starting from next week (Monday 5 February).

The existing paving slabs, between St Johns Road and St Marks Avenue, are being replaced with a bitumen surface over the next six weeks.

Temporary traffic lights will be used outside of peak travel times (9:30am – 3:30pm). Police launch Dawlish rape investigation

Police are appealing for witnesses following allegations of a rape in Dawlish.

The incident occurred on the beach path close to the Dawlish Warren Bird Nature Reserve on Thursday 18 January at around 11am.

The suspect is described as a white man, approaching 6ft in height and of stocky build. It is believed that the suspect may have had a tattoo in and around his right ear which could have been wings or an angel; the attackers face was covered.

It is believed that there were dog walkers in the vicinity who may have seen the victim immediately after the incident....
