Roads now clear to cut off communities

Good progress has been made today (Sunday) in clearing roads to communities left inaccessible due to snow.

The Council’s highways teams have been throwing all available resources at breaking through to previously cut off communities.

The primary salting network across Exmoor, including B roads, is now passable. Roads to villages North East of the North Devon Link Road and a few on Dartmoor and in the South Hams, that this morning were inaccessible, are this afternoon generally passable with care.

Dartmoor farmers work to benefit wildlife

A group of Dartmoor farmers have signed up to a new scheme to benefit wildlife in three Dartmoor river catchment areas.

So far 34 farmers in the East Dart, Upper Tavy and Cherry Brook/Lower West Dart catchments have signed up to work together to improve the natural environment at a landscape scale, to achieve greater improvements collectively than individual holdings may achieve on their own. A second scheme based around the Erme/ Yealm catchments is also being funded.

Emergency services continue to clear roads

A multi-agency operation has been underway for the past two days across Devon and Cornwall as Storm Emma hit the South West.

Emergency services have been working day and night to reopen roads, clear traffic and help those in need.

Police officers have been dealing with a number of road incidents over the past couple of days and stress that you should only travel if absolutely necessary.

'Deceptive' road conditions across Devon as A380 reopens

Road conditions across Devon today have been described as ‘deceptive’ by the County Council’s Highways Operations Manager, Chris Cranston.

“Despite relatively little snow overnight, the freezing rain across the county has left many roads still impassable, and people are being encouraged to think carefully about making any journeys until the roads have been cleared,” he said.

Exeter City v Chesterfield match postponed

Exeter City’s match with Chesterfield on Saturday has been postponed. Following a pitch inspection at 10am this morning a decision was made to call the match off for the safety of the players, staff and supporters of both clubs. A new date for the fixture has yet to be finalised but any tickets bought for Saturday’s game will be valid for the rearranged date with more details to follow next week. The club will remain closed until Monday.

Buses have been cancelled as heavy snowfall continues to cause problems on roads across Devon.

With widespread snowfall across the county, Devon County Council has announced it will close the A380 Telegraph Hill from 3pm today (Thursday 1 March) as a precautionary measure.

The decision to close the A380 between Splatford Split and Eagle Farm, has been taken as part of the Haldon/Telegraph Hill plan. Highways England will continue treating the A38 Haldon Hill, and Devon County Council will focus its efforts on keeping traffic moving on the alternative coastal road, A379 (Dawlish/Teignmouth).

More than 200 schools are closed across Devon today and an amber weather warning in place as snow blanketed much of the county.

Heavier wintry showers and strong winds are forecast later this afternoon posing even more tricky conditions for drivers.

The Met Office has issued RED warning for the county with the risk of up to 20cm of snow countywide, with the possibility of 50cm on high ground of Dartmoor and Exmoor.

Snowfall is expected to spread north throughout the course of the day. Conditions could become more disruptive to travel as the day progresses.
