SW small business eye share of nation’s £5bn Christmas Spend

Local small businesses across the South West are gearing up to take their share of a much-needed Christmas boost, as new data predicts the UK could spend £5.3 billion with small firms over the festive period, delivering critical end-of-year gains for this vital segment of the economy.

In wider positive economic signs, new data from the Small Business Saturday campaign also found Brits could spend over £23 billion in total across the UK this festive season, representing a nominal 16% year-on-year spending rise.

Exeter to train more of tomorrow’s doctors

The Government has granted permission for the University of Exeter Medical School to train an additional 88 Medicine students each year, in a major boost to the South West.

The additional numbers will mean more trainee doctors working in the region, and will bolster opportunities for Westcountry students to train in Medicine close to home. It will also mean an economic boost for Exeter and Truro, where the Medical School has campuses.

Waste and recycling collections suspended in Exeter

Due to the dangerous wintry conditions, Exeter City Council’s waste and recycling collections have been suspended today, Monday 19 March. Although most of the main roads are clear, pavements and side roads are slippery, which means a significant risk of injury to members of the public and the workforce. Over half of local employers struggling to hire skilled staff

More than half (56%) of South West firms are reporting difficulty recruiting skilled staff, and a third (33%) have seen increased staff turnover since June 2016, according to a new employment and skills study from Lloyds Banking Group and London business membership organisation, London First. The study sought to analyse the impact of Brexit on business recruitment and access to skills across the UK.
