Thousands of people are being called on to unite against dementia by signing up for Alzheimer’s Society’s Exeter Memory Walk.

61-year-old Andrea Rodgers from Torquay, whose mum has dementia, is urging people to register for the event to help the charity raise money for research and services.

Andrea’s mum, Jean, was diagnosed with dementia five years ago. The family has been through ups and downs, and has recently had a stressful time trying to arrange alternative accommodation for their mum following the closure of her care home.

On Saturday evening fire crews from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service were called to tackle two deliberate fires within derelict buildings. The first fire took place in Wellington, Somerset at 19.47 followed by the second in Bideford, Devon at 19.52.

Police warning after car park distraction thefts in Exeter

Police are warning the public to be on the lookout following a number of distraction thefts in supermarket carparks around Exeter.

During the past three weeks, police have received reports of seven incidents of distraction thefts in the area, all matching the same description; so far around £1,000 in cash has been stolen from victims.

Overnight closures on Bridge Road in Exeter this week

Bridge Road in Exeter will be closed overnight each evening this week.

The closure will be in place from 8:30pm to 5:30am from tonight (Monday 7 August) to, and including, Thursday 10 August. On Friday night (11 August), the road will be closed from 10pm until 5am on Saturday morning. Resurfacing will be carried out on the widened deck of the Countess Wear Flood Relief structure, and on the sections of road that tie in either end of the Swing Bridge. Exeter Chiefs legend Gareth Steenson has announced his most high profile signing ahead of his testimonial game at Sandy Park later this month… club chief executive Tony Rowe!

Fans are going to witness the Sandy Park supremo running out in a Chiefs strip for the first (and only) time.

Citizens Advice Exeter welcomes Taylor Review with reservations

Leading local advice charity, Citizens Advice Exeter, says that the recent Matthew Taylor review of modern employment practices includes many proposals which would help people currently at the sharp end of insecure work but says that enhanced rights and protections will require more effective enforcement.

The review report was published last month.

In the last year the charity has helped people with 1,074 enquiries about issues they were having at work. The main issues being:
