Chiefs Women sign Lola Whitley from Gloucester-Hartpury

Exeter Chiefs Women have signed versatile forward Lola Whitley from Gloucester-Hartpury.

The 21-year-old is equally comfortable at lock and in the back-row and played for England U20s last year.

Initially more of a fan of athletics, 100 metres and high jump in particular, Whitley began playing rugby at Sudbury RFC aged 13 when a friend dragged her along to a game. She started off on the wing and scored 10 tries in that first match.

She said: “I was pretty awful, but I just loved running though people!”

Strictly speaking, Exeter Chiefs have waltzed their way impressively to the top two of the Gallagher Premiership this season. Europe, on the other hand, remains a ‘work in progress’ as Rob Baxter’s side slipped to a second successive defeat at the hands of rivals Gloucester.

The visiting Cherry & Whites not only bolstered their own Pool 2 aspirations, but at the same time they gained sweet revenge for a 23-6 loss to Devon’s finest at the same venue just a fortnight ago.

Although they fell behind to an early Don Armand try – and again to Nic White’s converted score just...

Grecians fall down the table

Exeter City fell to a 2-0 defeat away from home against Bury in League Two.

Jay O'Shea netted a first half opener for the home side before Jayden Stockley saw his penalty saved in the second period. As the Grecians looked to level, they then found themselves further behind when Byron Moore scored to take the game away from City.

Manager Matt Taylor made three changes to the side that started the last league outing with Macclesfield Town as Craig Woodman, Aaron Martin and Chiedozie Ogbene came into the starting XI at Gigg Lane.

The Grecians almost went ahead inside...

Talented young Exeter sailor awarded exclusive use of brand-new boat

Bay Gorrod (13) from Exeter has been awarded exclusive use of an Optimist dinghy for the next two years thanks to the John Merricks Sailing Trust (JMST) and RYA OnBoard partnership. He is one of twelve promising sailors and windsurfers from across the UK who are benefiting from this partnership.

Since its launch in 2013, the partnership has supported youngsters who display enthusiasm, drive, talent and commitment to the sport but may not ordinarily have had the opportunity or financial backing to achieve their goals. In its six years, 76 boats and boards have been donated with some...

The festive season starts early at Exeter Racecourse on Friday (December 7) when all students with a valid student card are eligible for free entry.

A behind the scenes tour an hour before the first race will give those new to the sport an insight into racing, while a terrific seven race card will keep aficionados glued to the rails as they pin point future stars.

General manager Jack Parkinson said: “It’s the perfect raceday to have a long weekend, and begin it in style at Exeter Racecourse. It’s always a very competitive card, and a popular day out as an alternative to...

Haldon Gold Cup winner set for Champion Chase at Cheltenham

Haldon Gold Cup winner God’s Own is set for his fourth shot at the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham at the Festival in March, where connections will be hoping their horse builds on his recent win at Exeter.

Tom George’s runner produced one of his best performances from the last couple of years at the Devon racecourse when he defeated a strong field for the Grade One contest over 2m1f. Ridden by his regular pilot Paddy Brennan, the pair tracked the leaders in the early stages before making their charge with two fences to go. Jumping the last, the ten-year-old was neck and...

Grecians fall to defeat at St James Park

Harry Smith’s finish after 54 minutes condemned Exeter City to a 1-0 defeat at home to Macclesfield.

City looked the more likely in the opening period when Jonathan Forte almost found the net, but they struggled to break down a resilient Town side.

Grecians’ boss Matt Taylor made three changes from Saturday’s draw in Colchester, with Aaron Martin suspended, while Craig Woodman and Tristan Abrahams dropped to the bench for the incoming Luke Croll, Dean Moxey and Forte respectively.

The home side had the lion’s share of possession in the opening minutes, creating the...

Exeter City manager Matt Taylor praised the character of his team as they came from a goal down to draw with promotion rivals Colchester United.

Colchester took the lead when Sammie Szmodics volleyed home from outside the area with 67 minutes on the clock, but the Grecians responded quickly and levelled inside three minutes as Jayden Stockley bundled the ball home from close-range for his 11th goal of the season.

“It was a hard-earned point definitely,” said Matt. “Credit to the boys we went behind to what was a very good strike. It was probably going to take something...

Chiefs land first blow in three match run against Gloucester

In Part One of the Exeter Chiefs/Gloucester trilogy, it was Rob Baxter's table-toppers that landed the first telling blow.

Devon's finest made it 'eight from eight' in this season's Gallagher Premiership with a display that showed glimpes of sheer brilliance in attack but, more importantly, real determination and desire in defence.

Despite falling behind to two early penalties from Gloucester fly-half Danny Cipriani, the Chiefs recovered sufficiently to lead 10-6 at the break thanks to a converted try from Nic White and a penalty from Gareth Steenson.

Colchester 1 Exeter 1

Jayden Stockley scored his 11th goal of the season as Exeter City battled back from a goal down to earn a hard-fought points away at promotion rivals Colchester United.

Colchester had taken the lead when Sammie Szmodics hit a volley into the bottom corner with 67 minutes on the clock, but the Grecians responded superbly as Stockley fired home from close-range following a goalmouth scramble two minutes later.

City manager Matt Taylor named an unchanged team from the side that performed well in last Saturday’s 2-2 draw at home to Northampton Town, while Colchester United...
