£1.2m for rural economy in Mid and East Devon

The rural economy in Mid and East Devon will be bolstered with £1.2 million of funding support, Devon County Council has announced.

The County Council is overseeing the EU funded LEADER grants programme, which aims to create jobs and help to develop rural businesses. It is working with key partners, including Mid and East Devon District Councils, to ensure applicants receive the necessary support to access the funding.

Devon County Council is the accountable body for two of the five Local Action Groups across Devon – Making it Local and REAL Devon.

The Environment Agency and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) are warning that people posing for ‘storm selfies’ are putting their lives in danger. CCTV appeal after kebab shop assault

Police have issued CCTV images of two men they would like to speak to in connection with an assault in Exmouth.

A 35-year-old man was allegedly assaulted following an altercation with two men in the Best Kebab shop, Rolle Street, on Sunday 18 October shortly after 3.05am.

One of the suspects is reported to have punched the victim to the head, knocking him to the ground, and continued to punch and kick him.

Officers are appealing to the public to help identify the men pictured.

MP lobbies for anti-bullying charity

The MP for Central Devon has praised a South West-based anti-bullying charity in the lead up to national anti-bullying week (November 16-20) for its efforts in tackling bullying and reducing hate crimes.

The MP, Mel Stride, recently hosted a meeting in Westminster with Devon and Cornwall Police Inspector Ryan Doyle, the former High Sheriff of Devon, John Lee OBE, both from the Mid Devon area, and Children’s Minister Edward Timpson MP to discuss their work with the charity, "Local Heroes" and its key role in tackling intolerance and discrimination within schools.

This year's Exeter Christmas Market will run from Thursday 19 November until Saturday 19 December.

Council celebrates early success of Handy Person trial

Demand for free Handy Person service means trial area will now be extended to include all of East Devon.

The new Handy Person service, which in September 2015 began a six-month trial in Exmouth Town, Honiton and Axminster, has already proved such a success, that East Devon District Council has decided to roll out the trial across the entire district until the end of February 2016, which is when the trial concludes.

Samaritans seek volunteers with promise

The Exeter, Mid and East Devon branch of Samaritans is seeking more volunteers - with the promise that anyone who joins will make a difference and touch someone’s life.

Two open evenings are being held at the branch, in central Exeter, on November 24 and January 13 to explain what is involved and how people can help.

15 years of music in aid of National Trust

For many pupils, parents and National Trust supporters, the beginning of the Festive Season is heralded by the Exeter School Concert in aid of the National Trust in Exeter Cathedral.

Exeter scoops award for solar car ports

An initiative to install the UK's first solar panel car ports in two Exeter car parks has won an environmental award for Exeter City Council.

The City Council scooped The Most Sustainable Public Sector Project - Innovation Award at the Public Sector Sustainability Awards in London.
