Don't risk driving through floodwater

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is asking residents to heed warnings not to enter floodwater, as it could put themselves and others at risk.

Fire crews were called to several incidents where vehicles were stuck in floodwater to carry out rescues over the festive period. On 3 January, a cyclist was rescued in Newton Abbot after getting into difficulty near a swollen river.

A yellow weather warning for rain covering parts of Devon and Somerset has been issued by the Met Office as heavy rain showers are expected until Tuesday lunchtime.

The Met Office has issued another severe weather warning for Devon, as heavy and prolonged showers are set to return today.

The warning is valid until noon on Tuesday 5 January.

Some 5-10mm of rain could fall in an hour at times locally. Through the whole period of the warning an additional 10-20mm is expected quite widely across the area and very locally up to 40 mm, mainly over high ground.

Given the saturated ground, surface water flooding is possible.

Strong, gusty winds will be an additional hazard in places with gusts of 50mph possible around some...

The Business in Britain report, now in its 24th year, gathers the views of 1,500 UK companies, predominantly small to medium sized businesses, and tracks the overall “balance” of opinion on a range of important performance and confidence measures, weighing up the percentage of firms that are positive in outlook against those that are negative.

Since the last report in July 2015, business confidence in the South West - an average of respondents’ expected sales, orders and profits over the next six months - has declined to 40 per cent, down from 49 per cent. However the index remains...

500,000 people in SW cutting back on winter essentials to pay rent or mortgage

The New Year may not be very happy for hundreds of thousands of people in the South West, as research by Shelter reveals a fifth of rent or mortgage payers in the region are cutting back on winter heating and clothing to meet their housing payments. This is the equivalent to 500,000 people.

The study by housing and homelessness charity Shelter and YouGov shows the strain people in the South West face this January, with one in eight rent or mortgage payers fearing they will be unable to meet their housing costs this month.

This is despite the fact that many have already cut...
