Curtain up for Sidmouth’s annual Summer Play Festival

Award-winning West End producer Paul Taylor-Mills will be raising the curtain on his hugely popular Summer Play Festival at Sidmouth’s Manor Pavilion Theatre on Thursday (June 23) with a three-month run of productions featuring works from iconic playwrights including Coward, Wilde and Ayckbourn.

Theatregoers are in for a real treat this year with an amazing programme of 12 plays in as many weeks, which include such classics as The Ladykillers, Pygmalion, One Man, Two Guv’nors and Private Lives.

Exeter City to remember players killed in Somme

Exeter City Football Club will be remembering four former players who died during the Battle of the Somme at a special ceremony to be held at their St James Park war memorial.

The memorial service, in partnership with the Royal British Legion, will take place at 2pm on Friday 1 July. This is the exact centenary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Jewellery stolen in Dawlish burglary

Police are appealing for information after a large quantity of sentimental jewellery was stolen from a property in Dawlish.

Several gold and silver rings, necklaces, bracelets and anklets, similar to the items pictured, were taken during the burglary at a property in Badlake Hill on Wednesday 15 June, sometime between 8.10am and 7.20pm.

A sapphire and diamond gold eternity ring, a ruby and diamond gold ring, a silver necklace with a green Chinese letter pendant and a Rotary gents’ chronograph watch were among the items taken.

Major blaze in Exmouth

Several roads were closed after a major blaze broke out in Exmouth this morning (Tuesday 21 June).

The fire is believed to have started at the Consol Sun tanning studio in The Parade and spread to Ladbrookes next door.

The Parade between The Strand and Exeter Road is currently closed in Exmouth.

The Fire Service was called to a report of smoke coming from a shop on the Parade in Exmouth at around 7.10am today.

Two fire engines from Exmouth along with one from Middlemoor were sent to this incident.

Choirs collaborate for cancer cause

Three choirs present Summer Sing – “a joyous, uplifting evening of singing” – in Exeter on Friday, July 8, to help people with cancer and their families. Teignmouth Art Society's summer sketching day a success

On Thursday 17th June, Powderham Castle welcomed members of Teignmouth Art Society for the beginning of their summer sketching season.

This year, the event drew a record number of artists on the day, with 25 members attending. This included a mix of novice and experienced artists, with many taking inspiration from Powderham’s deer park.

The magical setting of Powderham Castle is a firm favourite with Teignmouth Art Society, who have visited Powderham at the start of their season for a number of years.

On a balmy summers evening the mysterious nightjars were enjoyed at the Local Nature Reserve

The East Devon District Council Countryside teams’ second nightjar event will take place on Tuesday 5 July.

Earlier in June the public were shown around the Local Nature Reserve by Countryside Ranger Nathan Robinson, they learnt about heathland management and the elusive nightjars, which in the past were referred to as ‘ghastly goatsuckers’.

The group were treated to a beautiful summers evening as well as spectacular views of the nocturnal bird.

New lease of life for Duchy Square Centre

The Duchy Square Centre in Princetown has been given a new lease of life, re-opening with a range of business tenants.

Councillors have been given a tour of the rejuvenated building to see the array of companies that have moved in to give the local economy a boost.

The centre houses 15 businesses and nearly all of the units in the building are now occupied.
