Chiefs kick off season with six-try victory

Rob Baxter challenged his troops to deliver in battle ahead of their opening pre-season fixture against the Scarlets at a sun-baked Sandy Park.

Rob Baxter has warned his Exeter Chiefs squad they can ill afford to ease into the new 2016/17 season as opportunities to impress could well be scarce.

The Devon kick-off the first of three pre-season games tomorrow at home to the Scarlets (3pm) and Baxter is looking to give a large nucleus of his troops the chance to impress.

A playday event run by East Devon’s StreetScene team in Exmouth’s Phear Park in support of National Playday, has proved immensely popular with the local community.

The council-run playday, which took place on August 3, received plenty of support from a number of East Devon services, including the Recycling and Waste team, as well as local organisations such as Exmouth and District Children’s Centre, Exmouth in Bloom and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Dozens of firefighters tackle barn blaze

Fire appliances from Tiverton, Cullompton and Middlemoor, along with the water bowser from Danes Castle were mobilised to a report of a barn on fire at Lower Town near Halberton at 1.45 this afternoon (12 August).

Upon arrival the crews requested a further three appliances due to smoke and flames issuing. These cane from Wellington, Danes Castle and Witheridge together with the Incident Command Unit from Honiton.

Work to go ahead at Exeter railway arches

Work to prevent access and stop anti-social behaviour taking place under the railway arches in St Thomas is to go ahead.

Exeter City Council has approved £50,000 funding for the arches to be properly fenced off.

Cllr Rob Hannaford, Lead Councillor for Place, said the work would be carried out in response to complaints from local residents and traders about ongoing anti-social behaviour (ASB). Exeter student duo win national education awards

Two Exeter College students have been crowned winners at a coveted national educational awards in London.

Samuel Guy, from Sampford Peverell, near Tiverton, won Outstanding Sport Student of the Year at the National BTEC Awards, and James Steel, from Crediton, won Outstanding Hospitality and Travel and Tourism Student of the Year, at the National BTEC Awards.

The event, which celebrates achievement in the country’s most widely taken vocational qualification, was held at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London on Thursday 7th July 2016.
