Elite award for EDDC alarm service

East Devon District Council’s Home Safeguard service has comfortably retained a coveted industry chartermark – putting it among the top alarm providers in the UK.

The service for frail and vulnerable people first won the Telcare Services Association (TSA) accreditation three years ago and has since successfully passed two annual check-ups.

Last month (November), the TSA conducted a three-yearly audit, which is a tougher test than the annual checks and more akin to the original inspection in 2010, subjecting every aspect of Home Safeguard to in-depth scrutiny.

University staff stage second strike

University of Exeter staff are taking part in a second day of national strikes over pay conditions today (3 December). Members of the UCU, Unite and UNISON unions are holding a second day of strikes having already taken industrial action on October 31. Members of the EIS union, which represents Scottish university staff, are also join today’s strikes not having taken part of the previous strike. Free community composting courses for growers of Local Food taking place in Devon

Seize the Moment, a not for profit registered company, have teamed up with the Community Composting Network to deliver a course aimed specifically at local food growers to get them composting as well as growing.

The courses, which take place in a variety of locations across the UK, aim to get food growers to capture the nutrients and organic matter in local food and garden waste,and return that goodness to the soil where it's badly needed. Tough Choices needed on highways budget proposals

Devon County Council is exploring a number of options to reduce its highways and traffic management budget by almost £7 million.

As part of the County Council’s latest Tough Choices consultation, which was launched in September, Devon is considering how to cut spending in 2014/15.

Local Devon Businesses have been named as real growth industries as part of the London Stock Exchange group's ‘1000 companies that inspire Britain.’

The companies included Emcas based in Paignton, chartered accountants Francis Clark LLP and Masons Kings an agricultural machinery company with three depots in Devon.

Devon to freeze in icy blast

The Met office has warned of incoming frost as temperatures plunge in Devon.

An icy blast is set to end the current mild spell in the South of England and will begin a period of low average tempretures over the coming months.

The Met Office said: “Indications are that December will most likely be colder than average.

“For December-January-February as a whole uncertainty is quite large but below-average temperatures are more likely than above-average.”

The average temperature in December is 3.9C while January is slightly chillier at 3.6C.
