Dates announced for Devon County Show 2022

The Devon County Agricultural Association is delighted to announce that the 2022 Devon County Show will take place on Thursday 30th June, Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd July.

The event traditionally runs during the third week of May, but along with other shows was cancelled in 2020.

In 2021, the Show was delayed to July and was one of the few three-day agricultural shows to go ahead.

As a Covid Safe outdoor event, the organisers were delighted at the confidence of the general public and welcomed over 60,000 visitors across the three days.

Revealed: Exeter is one of the best locations to own an Airbnb

With a rise in the number of staycation holiday-makers, Airbnb is once again becoming a reliable source of income for many in the UK.

With this in mind, Crafted Beds have conducted a study to determine which UK locations will increase the value of an Airbnb listing per night.

The study by Crafted Beds found that Exeter was 4th on the list, with Newcastle taking the top spot for the most profitable location to own an Airbnb , earning £122 per night. They were closely followed by Leeds and York, whilst Edinburgh is charging the least at an average of £64.40 per night....

New bee habitats created thanks to brick donations

Six schools in the area have been nominated by the local community to be given a bee brick from RGB Building Supplies so they can encourage solitary bees to their outdoor areas.

For every sale over £150 during Solitary Bee Week, which took place between Monday 28th June and Sunday 4th July, RGB donated money to purchase bee bricks from Cornwall-based company Green&Blue. The builders merchant was able to buy 80 bricks, which will provide environments for bees to nest, and invited people to nominate schools, charities and community groups to receive one of the special bee...

Virtual hospital appointments save 13.5 million patient miles

Video and phone appointments held at hospitals across Devon saved patients an estimated 13.5 million miles of travelling; equivalent to circumnavigating the globe 550 times.

The NHS also estimates that, in the 12 months to 23 August 2021, the benefits of running virtual appointments also saved patients more than 277,679 hours in travel time and staying at home led to a reduction of over 2,500 tonnes of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Reducing air pollution through patients making fewer car journeys can also directly impact on people’s health.

Can Do Active launch new Couch to 5k

New health and wellbeing initiative, Can Do Active, are launching a new 12-week Couch to 5k programme in Exeter this Autumn, starting in October.

There will be two running groups a week, a weekday group meeting every Tuesday morning (9:30am - 10:30am) from the 5th October, and a weekend group meeting every Saturday morning (10:30am - 11:30am) from the 9th October - both starting at Exwick Playing Fields.

Team at Exeter Hobbycraft celebrate new store opening

Hobbycraft, the UK’s largest arts and crafts retailer, celebrated the opening of its new store at Rydon Retail Park, Exeter on Saturday with a host of crafting activities, product offers and goody bags for the first 100 customers who walked through the doors.

A group of students from the University of Exeter recently put their training into practice by helping to deliver first-rate medical care at Reading Festival.

Thirteen medical students and for the first time, one nursing student, based at the University's St Luke’s campus in Exeter and Truro campus in Cornwall, gained valuable experience of working in a fast-paced and busy environment by manning the first aid tent and responding to incidents at one of the biggest festivals in the UK.

Crowds and sunshine come out for Devon Stage of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain

The AJ Bell Tour of Britain was greeted with a welcome that was as warm as the temperatures in Devon today (Monday 6 September).

Devon hosted Stage Two of this year’s race, with the professional riders starting in Sherford under blue skies, matching the AJ Bell Leader’s jersey worn by Olympic silver medallist Wout Van Aert at the start of the day after his victory in the opening stage in Cornwall.
